Guelph’s Chadd Bauman suspended for Memorial Cup final

LONDON, Ont. — It wasn't reckless or dangerous, but Chadd Bauman's knee-on-knee contact with Val-d'Or defenceman Guillaume Gélinas was caused by carelessness.

While Gélinas is trying to heal in time to play in Friday's semifinal, Bauman has been suspended for Sunday's final. It's a pretty easy call for the Canadian Hockey League. The onus is on the forechecking player to adapt to the puck carrier's sudden movement, and as Guelph Mercury beat writer Tony Saxon pointed out: "The quick defenceman made an evasive move, Bauman couldn't adjust quickly enough."

Here's Saxon (@SaxonOnTheStorm):

[Storm coach Scott] Walker said he's become "accustomed to not being surprised" by supplementary discipline decisions.

"They're trying to protect the players and as soon as he (Gelinas) got hurt, I thought Chadd might get something," Walker said.

Gelinas was helped off the ice after the play and did not play Tuesday night in Val-d'Or's 4-3 overtime win over the Edmonton Oil Kings. The team is calling the injury "a contusion" and lists Gelinas as "hour to hour."

Walker said Bauman took the news in stride.

"I'm sure he's very disappointed, but he keeps it inside. He's not going to curl up in a ball or anything," Walker said. "He's not one to show his emotions too much." (Guelph Mercury)

The Ontario Hockey League tends to be the quickest to hand out suspensions, which would explain why the Storm took it in stride. There's not much argument to the contrary.

Bauman is the Storm's seventh defenceman, but has done yeoman's work as a fourth-line left wing. The 18-year-old's versatility came in handy throughout the season when Guelph had to patch holes in the lineups due to injuries and suspensions. The ruling is just, but one can empathize with the 18-year-old who grew up not far from Guelph in Conestogo, Ont., will miss the biggest game of all.
