Delisle nets hat trick for Victoriaville; McCann and the Sault go nuts: Saturday’s 3 stars

No. 1 star: Carl-Antoine Delisle (Victoriaville Tigres, QMJHL)

Delisle paced the Tigres to a squeaker 4-3 win over the Val-d’Or Foreurs. He factored in on every goal for Victoriaville, scoring three and assisting the other. Delisle scored the last three goals in the win in Val-d’Or.

Brandon Whitney stopped 44-of-47 shots in the win, including 36 saves in the final two periods. François Tremblay took the loss, stopping 17-of-21, but only facing six Tigres shots in the last two periods.

Delisle assisted on Mark Tremaine’s goal to open the scoring early in the first period, then chipped in one of his own with a solo effort shorthanded midway through the period. He also scored in the second and third periods. The goals were Delisle’s first three of the season.

Alex Filiatrault had two assists for the Tigres, who improved to 3-1-0-0. Anthony Mantha and Nicolas Aube-Kubel each had a goal and an assist for the Foreurs, who dropped to 1-3-0-0 on the year. Guillaume Gélinas added two helpers, and Pierre-Maxime Poudrier went a remarkable 22-for-29 in the faceoff circle.

No. 2 star: Jared McCann (Sault St. Marie Greyhounds, OHL)

McCann and the Greyhounds exploded offensively in a 10-3 win over the Sudbury Wolves. McCann potted four goals for the Hounds, whose five goals in the second period blew the game wide open and chased starter Frankie Pallazzese from the Wolves cage at the Essar Centre.

The Hounds got balanced scoring throughout their lineup, as another center, Sergey Tolchinsky, scored a goal and added three assists in the victory. The Hounds got goals from seven different players in the win, and only four players in the lineup didn’t factor in the scoring.

McCann opened the scoring early in the first with help from linemates Brandon Hughes and Andrew Fritsch. Sault St. Marie led 3-2 after one period before storming to five goals in the second, including two from McCann. Matt Murray got the win in net, stopping 29 shots.

No. 3 star: Stéphane Auger (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL)

Auger is the lone defensive representative amongst Saturday’s three stars, but it’s a well deserved one. Auger stopped 44 shots in a 2-1 win over the Acadie Bathurst Titan at Harbour Station.

Former Moosehead Dominic Beauchemin was the only Titan player to put a puck behind Auger, who stopped 18 Titan shots in the third period. Spencer Smallman and Steven Anderson scored for the Sea Dogs, while Oliver Cooper had two assists.

Mason MacDonald took the loss in the Titan net, stopping 32-of-34.

Honorable mention: Emile Poirier (Gatineau Olympiques, QMJHL)

Poirier took one game to get warmed up before unleashing his anger of getting cut from Flames camp. He had two goals and two assists, his first points of the season, in a 6-4 Olympiques win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.

Poirier had points on the first three Gatineau goals and scored an insurance marker shorthanded midway through the third period. The Huskies scored twice in the final five minutes but it was too little, too late.

Anthony Brodeur got the win in his first career QMJHL start, while Alexandre Bélanger took the loss.

Honorable mention: Josh Winquist (Everett Silvertips, WHL)

Winquist was the core of the offence for the Tips in their 8-3 win over the Prince George Cougars. Winquist had three goals and an assist in the victory. Winquist scored shorthanded, on the powerplay, and at even strength in the win.

Dawson Leedahl and Manraj Hayer each had a pair of goals in the win. Austin Lotz got the win in net, while the damage was split between netminders Brett Zarowny and Ty Edmonds, with Zarowny giving up four goals in just over a period before Edmonds took over. Former Edmonton Oil King Klarc Wilson scored twice in the loss.

Honorable mention: Eric Roy (Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL)

Roy had assists on all three of the Wheat Kings goals in a 3-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. He led the team with a +3 rating.

Taylor Cooper, with his league-leading fourth goal of the year, John Quinneville and Chad Robinson scored for the Wheat Kings. Brayden Point’s goal midway through the third period broke a Curtis Honey shutout bid, who ended up with 40 saves. Moose Jaw had 22 shots in the third period and outshot the Wheat Kings 41-31.

Honorable mention: Julius Honka (Swift Current Broncos, WHL)

Honka, like Roy, had three assists in Swift Currents 3-2 win over the Regina Pats. Every goal in this game came with the man advantage. Honka’s helpers were all secondary assists.

Braycen Martin added two assists for the Broncos, and Landon Bow stopped 18-of-20 in the win. Chandler Stephenson and captain Kyle Burroughs each had two points in the loss. Teegan Sacher took the L in goal.
