Connor-icles: Erie Otters, for $397, offer fans a chance to skate with McDavid

To quote a popular meme, one does not simply skate with Connor McDavid.

The latest joint reminder comes via (a) McDavid having another seemingly obligatory four-point night for the Ontario Hockey League-leading Erie Otters, his sixth in the season's first 13 games; and (b) the Otters' belief that 25 people will part with $397 US to skate with their star following their game on Saturday.

First, the highlights. Picking out McDavid's best bits of brilliance during Erie's win on Thursday over the Plymouth Whalers was like being at the world's greatest all-you-can-eat buffet. The big jaw-droppers seem to be his second assist, an aerial pass that Alex DeBrincat collected and fired home for a goal, as well as his first goal, where he threaded the puck through Plymouth's Mathieu Henderson, then deked reigning OHL goalie of the year Alex Nedeljkovic short-side.

"It's always something different with him," Otters right wing Nick Betz told the Erie Times-News. "I feel like you know what you're going to get with him every night. But he gets on the ice, he surprises you with something else every night."

Meantime, with no game scheduled on Halloween, the Otters are staging a pricey promotion involving the prodigy. For $397 US, a group of up to but no more than 25 fans can skate with McDavid following Erie's home game on Saturday against the Ottawa 67's. The other goodies include a photo with the chosen one — are we sure this doesn't count as making a graven image — a game ticket, and a signed replica jersey.

(Three hundred and ninety-seven bucks times 25 could equal helping a lot of OHL players get seed money to start a business after their hockey days are done. Just saying.)

To some people, that might be an 'I paid what it cost' deal. Meantime, McDavid, with 38 points over 13 games (including 11 multi-point efforts), is killing any comparisons. Six of the last eight NHL first overall picks hailed from the OHL, but none had half as much hype. The league really hasn't seen this kind of phenomena with a 17-year-old since Eric Lindros was with the Oshawa Generals 24 years ago. And the thing is, everyone around the league saw it coming, but didn't want to spoil it by expecting everything.
