Blainville-Boisbriand Armada’s Ryan Tesink ejected for check from behind in QMJHL playoffs (VIDEO)

Getting ejected from his final junior game in his native New Brunswick is likely not the way Ryan Tesink intended to come full circle, but it happened.

The Blainville-Boisbriand Armada centre has been one of the chippier and probably one of the more determined players in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League over the past four years, repeatedly coming back from injuries to be a contributor to winning teams. However, the Armada, who are up 3-2 on the Moncton Wildcats in their best-of-7 first-round series with Game 6 (and 7, if necessary) slated for its home ice at the Centre d'excellence Sports Rousseau, might have to do it without the centre.

On Thursday, Tesink got a major and game misconduct after a brutal, gratuitous check from behind that injured the Wildcats' rookie defenceman Adam Holwell. It did not appear that Holwell did anything to turn into the illegal contact, and Tesink should have had a good view of his opponent's back. Granted, applying the concept of 'if you can see the numbers, lay off' is hard to apply at game speed.

The 20-year-old Tesink filled an important role with the Saint John Sea Dogs' President's Cup-winning teams in 2010-11 and '11-12 as a feisty two-way forward who often seemed to antagonize older and bigger opponents in a way that was often endearing, depending on the observer's allegiances. A younger player is often expected to fill that niche for a major junior team, but an overage player is supposed to be more aware of the score and game situation. Blainville-Boisbriand trailed the Wildcats 2-1 in the second period at that point. It killed off the ensuing five-minute power play and tied the game on Frédéric Bergeron's goal before the end of the frame. But being down one of its forwards and having to re-organize forward lines couldn't have helped its cause.

It is kind of fitting that Tesink couldn't get out of New Brunswick without some controversy. There was a dispute last season when the Armada traded for him and protested that they had no received full disclosure about an injury, which forced the QMJHL to work out a compromise. Notoriety just sticks to some people.

The QMJHL meted out three multi-game suspensions for checks from behind during the regular season. It's hard to see how it won't act here.
