Missouri squad forfeits playoff game because too many of its players are going to a farming convention
Of all the reasons schools have given for forfeiting a football game, none may be quite as novel as the one offered up by South Holt High (Oregon, Mo.) that officially ended it’s season with a first round playoff forfeit against Stewartsville High (Stewartville, Mo.): Too many South Holt players decided to attend the national Future Farmers of America (FFA) convention.
According to the St. Joseph News-Press, as brought to Prep Rally’s attention by USA Today, South Holt school officials told Stewartsville coach Corey Creason that the school would be unable to field a team for the schools’ 8-man football playoff game because so many members of the squad were attending the 2013 national FFA convention in Louisville, Kentucky.
As the News-Press put it oh so eloquently, the final scoreline from the forfeit could very well read like this: Stewartsville 2, South Holt 0 (forfeit, too many future farmers).
The loss is just the latest and perhaps most embarrassing setback in a season of them at South Holt. The team finished the season 0-9 and had a handful of players drop off the team in the midst of the winless season, frustrated with the lack of success.
The team still qualified for the district playoffs because of league format, but no one actually harbored serious hopes that South Holt would win the face-off against Stewartsville.
Instead, Stewartsville will advance to the district semifinals without taking a single snap while South Holt will finish 0-10, outscored by a whopping 515-62.
Perhaps the preference for farming above football is a fitting epitaph.
