New football coach resigns after Fourth of July DUI before ever coaching a single game

A new high school head football coach has resigned before ever taking charge of a first game after his arrest on a DUI charge sent a Tennessee program into a scramble for a second new head coach in fewer than three months.

As reported by Nashville NBC network WSMV and the Stewart Houston Times, Dover (Tenn.) Stewart County High football coach Kenny Haggard resigned two days after he was arrested on the Fourth of July for driving under the influence. Fellow Nashville network WTVF confirmed the coach's departure with Stewart County Principal Mike Craig on Friday.

The only details furnished about the now-former coach's arrest are that he was taken into custody at 5:30 on Independence Day and was released on bond less than three hours later. The Stewart Houston Times reported that the coach's bail was set at a modest $500.

Haggard's resignation ends a remarkably brief stint as the Stewart County head coach. The 47-year-old had taken the reins at Stewart County on May 21, leaving him little time to begin any form of official training for the program heading into the fall season.

Those duties will now follow to yet another new coach at the school, with the former civilian contractor in Iraq and Dover resident forced to search for another position back in his homeland.
