The best buzzer-beater from the first day of March Madness came in a Tenn. prep game

Did you see the incredible buzzer-beater on the first day of March Madness? No? Well, that's probably because it didn't come in the traditional form of March Madness that had most of America glued to CBS, TNT, TBS and (yes) Tru TV.

Rather, the bucket of the day, by a mile, came from a quarterfinal tournament game in Tennessee, where a player drilled a 75-foot buzzer-beater to force overtime, an extra period in which his team prevailed to keep a magical run going.

The player you see drilling the miracle shot in the video above -- as provided by PlayOn! Sports -- is Lake County (Tenn.) High star Derrick Swift, who had no time to think before throwing up a herculean effort at the buzzer. At the time, his Lake County squad was trailing Class A power Memphis (Tenn.) Booker T. Washington High, 67-64. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, that deficit was a bit surprising because Lake County had actually controlled the pace and flow of the game, only to see the Washington Warriors pull ahead in the final minutes.

In fact, all BTW had to do to clinch a spot in the state semifinals was hit a single free throw. The Warriors were in the double bonus, giving star Martavious Newby two attempts to ice the game.

He missed both, the rebound came to Swift and the rest, as they say, is history.

"We know how much time we have and how many dribbles we can take before we have to let it go," Lake County boys basketball coach Dawn Barger told the Jackson Sun's Michael Odom, as relayed by the Commercial Appeal. "But we haven't made one in practice all year, we must have been something like 0 for 500. I'm glad we made one today."

That's putting it mildly. Given the sheer shift in momentum from the made shot, it's no surprise that Lake County pulled away for a victory after Swift's shot went in. In fact, watching the shot sink through the net may have been a daunting experience for BTW because Lake County entered as the defending state champion; they'd been in these kind of tight games before, and they'd always seemed to win.

They won again, this time 79-77, thanks to one miraculous shot. Given how important the bucket was, it's even likely Barger is now content with her team's 1-for-501 shooting percentage from 75 feet.
