Lee Westwood nearly joins 59 club, John Daly (!) in second place

Golf never stops, so it isn't a surprise that this week's Thailand Golf Championship has a few recognizable names. And the good news is, Lee Westwood, one of the participants gearing up for another big season, had himself quite the first round.

Westwood was 7-under through six holes on Thursday, admitting after that 59 was already on his mind at that point, and turned at 29, but had to "settle" for a 12-under 60, the course record at the Amata Spring Country Club.

It's funny, because no matter what round of golf you shoot, it can always be better. I remember years ago when Phil Mickelson shot 59 at the Grand Slam of Golf, he missed a very short eagle putt on the last hole for 58. Westwood's 60, his career low, didn't have its own fair share of missed opportunities.

"I gave myself a few chances. Left one short on the hole on 11 and one short on 14. Had a good chance on 16 as well. I don't think you can be disappointed with a 60. I have to be a fairly harsh critic of myself to walk away disappointed."

Almost more surprising than Westwood's flirt with golf's magic number was the name right behind him on the leaderboard. John Daly, who was last seen storming off a golf course at the Australian Open after he ran out of golf balls, shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday and while five shots back of Westwood, is in second place alone by three shots.
