John Daly says he smokes 40 cigarettes and drinks 10-12 Diet Cokes each day, but no alcohol

John Daly says he smokes 40 cigarettes and drinks 10-12 Diet Cokes each day, but no alcohol

If you were going to make a list of the most entertaining golfers ever, you might find Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods on a lot of lists, but John Daly isn't far off.

The two-time major winner has been a living roller coaster his entire career, but the 47-year-old has toned it down over the last few years and it shows. Daly talked with the Guardian's Ewan Miller before his annual trip to the Masters, an event he isn't invited to currently but still sells merchandise outside of the local Hooters in Augusta, and described a typical day in the life of Daly.

Daly told Miller that he hasn't had an alcoholic drink in almost six years, which is pretty darn impressive for a man that has an admitted obsessive personality, but said he still knocks back cigarettes at a solid clip and is still fairly obsessed with Diet Coke.

How many can he consume a day? Let Daly tell you.

He still smokes – to the tune of 40-a-day – but his infamous Diet Coke fondness has been toned down a little.

"I still drink that but not nearly as much as I used to," Daly explains. "The (lap-band) won't allow me to drink as many. If I don't have ice, I can't drink it. I can't have it straight because of the carbonation. I have to drink it slowly and not out of a can, I need some ice. I used to have 26-28 cans a day. Now I have 10-12 at the most."

That is a pretty incredible number for any one man, but for Daly it is definitely better than the life he used to have and you have to give him props for his ability to stay away from alcohol, even if that means knocking back a Diet Coke every other hour.

As for his golf game, Daly admits he is "close," even saying he wouldn't continue doing this if he didn't love the game. This season has been very much like his career, with a T-32 at the Sony Open and a T-49 at the Puerto Rico Open, but sprinkled in there is a second round 90 that Daly shot at the Valspar Championship in March.

Make sure you take a second and check out the entire interview, as it is very, very interesting if you've ever found yourself rooting for John Daly (and I'm sure you have).
