Week 7 Injury Wrap: Waiting on Antonio Gates; Lewis and Maclin out

Week 7 Injury Wrap: Waiting on Antonio Gates; Lewis and Maclin out

We’ll start our weekly status check with the messy injury situations in San Diego and Buffalo, then catch up with the rest of the league, position by position.

Although Antonio Gates has dealt with a laundry list of injuries through the years, generally he’s been free of knee problems. Alas, not this week.

According to our friend Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Gates has a left MCL sprain and is considered a game-time decision for Sunday’s date against Oakland. It’s a cruel blow of uncertainty for fantasy players, given how poorly the Raiders cover the tight end. If Gates can’t go, Ladarius Green becomes a lovely fantasy option.

Keenan Allen (hip) and Melvin Gordon (ankle) are also up in the air; they put in some work Friday after a couple of inactive days. Allen is worth waiting for; Gordon probably not. Stevie Johnson (hamstring) had a week of partial workouts and seems like a reasonable bet to play.

Buffalo’s offense remains a MASH unit into the Sunday morning London game with Jacksonville (Watch With The World, amigos; only on Yahoo). Tyrod Taylor, Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin and Karlos Williams are all ruled out, along with a couple of starters on the offensive line. I expect Shady McCoy and Charles Clay to perform well, and perhaps you can dial up Chris Hogan or Robert Woods in a pinch at wide receiver. EJ Manuel will be the quarterback again.

Running Back

• The Jags brought T.J. Yeldon (groin) to London, so they’re hoping to have him Sunday morning. He had limited work the last two days.

• Dion Lewis (abdomen) was limited in all three days of practice and remains questionable on the injury report. Reports surfacing Sunday morning make it seem that he's unlikely to play. Sounds like LeGarrette Blount and James White could be the central pieces against the Jets.

Adrian Peterson (illness) was added to the injury report Saturday. It sounds as if he'll try to go at Detroit, but you'll need to confirm his status before the 1 pm ET kickoff. (Sunday update: He's active.)

• Bilal Powell (ankle) won’t play at New England, which means Zac Stacy backs up Chris Ivory.

• Tre Mason (ankle) missed the full practice week and although he’s listed as questionable, that sounds optimistic. Get ready for The Gurley Show against Cleveland.

• Joique Bell (ankle) is expected to return for the Lions, which mucks up the backfield a bit. You can’t use him, but he might steal work from Theo Riddick (who I like) and Ameer Abdullah (who I don’t trust).

• Chris Thompson (back) is unlikely to play against the Bucs, which might make Matt Jones more fantasy relevant.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

• Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) had a partial practice Friday after missing the two earlier days of work. He’s expected to play against Dallas, but that needs to be verified Sunday.

• John Brown (hamstring) didn’t practice Friday, though he insists he’s going to play Monday against Baltimore. It would be nice to see Brown do something Saturday, just to feel safe, but for now I’ll keep him in my provisional lineups.

• The Cowboys list Dez Bryant (foot) as doubtful, but he might as well have the “out” tag. He hasn’t practiced all week.

• Jeremy Maclin passed through the league’s concussion protocol, so it seemed he'd be a go Sunday against the Steelers. Not so fast: he's turned into a surprise game-day scratch. Albert Wilson and Chris Conley are the next men up.

• Brandon LaFell (foot) had a solid week of practice, but it’s not clear if the Patriots are ready to put him on the active list. Even if LaFell were to be in uniform, I can’t view him as a startable fantasy option until a prove-it game.

• Tavon Austin (thigh) missed two days of practice, then had a limited Friday. He needs confirmation Sunday.

• Austin Seferian-Jenkins (shoulder) isn’t ready yet after a full week of non-practice.

• DeSean Jackson (hamstring) remains week-to-week and won’t play against Tampa Bay.

• Eric Ebron (knee) is good to go after two weeks off. He’s listed as probable. Brandon Pettigrew (knee) is out.

• With Harry Douglas (ribs) out, the Titans need Justin Hunter or Dorial Green-Beckham to step into more snaps this week. I’m on board with DGB as an interesting sleeper.

• Cecil Shorts (shoulder) won’t play at Miami, not that you were likely considering him. Nate Washington and Keith Mumphrey are the support guys, watching DeAndre Hopkins do his thing.

[Week 7 rankings: Quarterback | Running Back | Receiver | Flex | Tight End | All Positions]

• Charles Johnson (ribs) is expected to play at Detroit, but he may have lost his job to Stefon Diggs. I wouldn’t bother adding Johnson in any standard-sized league.

• Nelson Agholor (ankle) isn’t going to dress Sunday at Carolina. Watch this passing game at your own risk.

Quarterback

• Marcus Mariota (knee) won’t play against Atlanta and is week-to-week going forward. The Titans have a reasonable backup in Zach Mettenberger, who offers some sleeper and DFS upside.

• The Steelers have yet to officially rule out Ben Roethlisberger (knee), but all context clues point to Landry Jones getting the start at Kansas City.
