Video: Wil Myers hit a homer on Wednesday that might land on Friday
OK, so our headline is somewhat misleading. The home run hit by Wil Myers on Wednesday night has, in fact, landed — you can clearly see the ball crash to Earth in the video above.
But you have to admit, that thing traveled a significant distance. It cleared 13 rows of bleachers plus the left-field concourse, then continued on its way. Myers' blast is believed to be the longest ever hit at Omaha's Werner Park, although we don't yet have an official estimate. Let's just call it a moonshot.
Myers entered the season ranked among the top prospects in Kansas City's system, and he's feasted on minor league pitching all year. The 21-year-old outfielder has hit .354 across two levels with 12 doubles, 15 homers and 35 RBIs, reaching base at a .428 clip. The Royals promoted him to Triple-A Omaha on May 16 and he's had no trouble at all adjusting to the quality of competition. He's 10-for-24 with the Storm Chasers through seven games, with three Ks and four walks. Wednesday's homer was his second in as many days.
It's worth noting that Myers didn't actually seem all that impressed with his tape-measure shot. Check the postgame comments, via MiLB.com...
"I didn't even know [it set a record]," he said. "It wasn't my furthest home run of the year, I don't think. At least I think I hit one in spring in [Double-A] Arkansas that was further than that."
Pfffft. Please. That thing? Not my best work. Come to the ballpark on Thursday, I'll show you a real home run.
