Six-Pack: Sean Monahan makes the leap

Western Conference bias continues as we try to sell you on another Calgary forward. Here are some puck pickups to consider, something for every budget.

-- Sean Monahan, C, Flames (31 percent owned in Yahoo): After an eight-game goalless stretch to open the year, Monahan now has six tallies in his last eight starts. It's a shame the shots on goal haven't spiked much over that period, but at least his playing time has jumped significantly (and his power-play time as well). And remember we're chasing pedigree with Monahan, the sixth overall pick in the 2013 draft. Last week we told you to pick up Johnny Gaudreau, and now we want you to ride with his linemate.

-- Jori Lehtera, C, Blues (20 percent): He's a facilitator at the pivot, not someone who looks to finish a play himself (just 19 shots), but anyone skating next to Vladimir Tarasenko (and Jaden Schwartz, at that) is someone I'm intrigued with. A 3-8-11 overall line and a four-game scoring run works nicely, along with a sneaky mean streak (penalty minutes in four of seven games). Lehtera also receives regular power-play run, part of the two-unit cycle the Blues work with. It was a long wait for the 2008 draftee to come over from international play, but the Blues are smiling now.

-- Jakub Kindl, D, Red Wings (2 percent): The Detroit power play is just middle of the pack over the first five weeks, but nonetheless it's encouraging to see Kindl starting to run with the second unit. He picked up three power-play points last week and has shown more willingness to shoot the puck and take the initiative offensively. Keep in mind he recorded 19 points last year over 66 games, without ideal usage. He might be able to grab is 25-30 this time around.

-- Nail Yakupov, RW, Oilers (40 percent): He's generally an ambivalent call because he's let us down so many times before, but I believe in following the shots and asking questions later. Yakupov's collected 25 shots over his last six games, along with a goal and two assists. If you're hung up on outcome bias, you're probably not interested, but I like the process the kid is showing. One more time, I'll let Lucy Van Pelt hold the football and see if I can kick it. (I'm not just telling you to talk yourself into Yakupov, I've made the move myself.)

-- Cam Ward, G, Hurricanes (30 percent): I'm stunned to see the modest ownership tag here, because in all of my leagues, there are knife fights for any starting netmidner. The Hurricanes couldn't get out of their own way for most of October, but they're finally off the skids, with Ward stringing together four consecutive victories. If you're particular about protecting your ratios, note he's carrying a 2.34 GAA and .914 SVP at home. Season to taste, but I could see skimming him in some medium and deep pools.

-- Boone Jenner, LW/C, Blue Jackets (6 percent): It's clear how much the Columbus coaching staff likes Jenner, as they've immediately plugged the injury-returnee onto a line with Scott Hartnell and Cam Atkinson. Jenner's collected two assists and nine shots through three games, and he's hitting everything that moves. A 20-20-40 type of return, with 150 shots and a boatload of hits, is well within reach. And make note of the dual-position eligibility, as we're always struggling to find useful left wings.
