Frank Francisco and the Jays stuck in committee?
On Wednesday, when asked about Frank Francisco and the Blue Jays' closer situation, Toronto manager John Farrell told us "we haven't anointed anyone else."
What Farrell neglected to mention was that he intended to anoint pretty much everyone else. This from MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm, via tweet:
Blue Jays appear to be in closer by committee although Farrell doesn't want to use that term. Francisco, Rauch, Dotel and Frasor all options
Francisco has been the losing pitcher in two of his last three appearances, allowing six hits and five earned runs over two innings during that unfortunate stretch. He's given up at least one run in five of his 10 appearances in May.
Jon Rauch has been no better recently, giving up runs in each of his last three outings. Octavio Dotel has basically been a dice roll since 2004, although he earned a two-out save on Saturday against the Astros. He could be up next, because committees aren't built to last. No Jays' reliever has been as effective as Jason Frasor so far this year (1.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 9.2 K/9), so he is a ticking bomb can't be ruled out, either.
Your move, gamers. I've owned all these guys, only rarely enjoyed it. If I needed tonight's save ... ugh. I don't know if I could pull the trigger on Dotel. Maybe with your roster, not mine. Do what you must. Perhaps you should hold Francisco, visit the trade market, reminisce about the BJ Ryan era.
