World Cup report cards: how have the players with Canadian ties done through the group stage?
There are plenty of players with Canadian ties of one sort or another in the World Cup, including Asmir Begovic (who played for Canada at the youth levels before choosing to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina), Jonathan de Guzman (who was born in Canada, but chose to represent the Netherlands), Michael Bradley (an American who plays for Toronto FC), Julio Cesar (a Brazilian who plays for Toronto FC) and Steven Beitashour (an American who plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps and suits up for Iran internationally). Now that the group stage is over, how have they done? Here's a report card for each player so far (alphabetically by last name):
Asmir Begovic: B+: Begovic played a full 90 minutes in all three of Bosnia and Herzegovina's matches in the group stage. He made 10 saves in a 1-0 loss to Nigeria and six in a 3-1 win over Iran. His weakest performance came in a 2-1 loss to Argentina, where he conceded two goals and only made four saves; however, one was an own goal and the other was a superb strike from Lionel Messi. Overall, Begovic played very well, but his goalkeeping wasn't enough to let his team go through.
Steven Beitashour: INC: Beitashour was named as a substitute for each of Iran's matches, but never played. With the team eliminated after two losses (to Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina) and a draw (with Nigeria), his World Cup is over.
Michael Bradley: C-: Bradley has played in each of the U.S.' three matches so far, but hasn't particularly impressed in any of them. Against Ghana, he received plenty of criticism for less-than-crisp passes and poor efforts going forward. Against Portugal, he was better for most of the game, but made the critical turnover that led to their late tying goal. He didn't make any massive blunders against Germany, but still didn't really impress. We'll see if he can improve going forward. The next U.S. game is against Belgium Tuesday.
Julio Cesar: A-: Cesar has been very good in the Brazil net so far, playing a crucial role in holding Mexico to a 0-0 draw and doing well in a 3-1 win over Croatia and a 4-1 win over Cameroon. Brazil's offence hasn't been quite as deadly as expected so far, so Cesar may have to keep playing well for them to fulfill their dream of winning the World Cup at home. They face Chile Saturday.
Jonathan de Guzman: C+: de Guzman started in the Netherlands' 5-1 romp over Spain, but didn't really impress, completing just 20 passes, conceding two fouls, committing bad turnovers and earning a yellow card. He was substituted in the 62nd minute. The story in the Dutch's 3-2 win over Australia was similar; de Guzman played a bit better and even notched an assist, but was still largely forgettable before being taken off in the 78th minute. He didn't play in their third group-stage game against Chile. We'll see if that was just a temporary change or not, or if he's unable to make it back into their lineup going forward. They play Mexico Sunday.
