Watching Donovan Bailey watch Andre De Grasse win bronze in the 100m is must-see TV

If we’ve learned one thing these Olympic Games, it’s that Canadian Olympic champions from the past really, really enjoy watching Canadian Olympians of the present — especially when they win a medal.

Earlier during the 2016 Rio Games, Canadians saw CBC commentator and former swimmer Mark Tewksbury, who won gold in the 100-metre backstroke in 1992, celebrate Canada’s many medals in the pool, including becoming emotional when Penny Oleksiak won gold in the 100m freestyle, the first for this country since he was atop the podium 24 years ago.

But on Sunday night, it was all about the men’s 100m final, the marquee event of the Games, and CBC had Donovan Bailey in their studio that evening to provide expert analysis. While Bailey, who won gold for Canada in the 100m event 20 years ago in Atlanta, gave valuable insight, the highlight of his TV appearance was watching him watch the race live and celebrate as Canada’s Andre De Grasse crossed the line in third place.

CBC aired the behind-the-scenes footage of Bailey jumping up and down as the race unfolded before his eyes shortly after the event aired. And Bailey’s mix of nerves and pure joy delighted many Canadians.
