The key to any Davis Cup tie is how the stronger country's No. 2 fares against the underdog's top player.

And after Canadian Vasek Pospisil dispatched Colombia's No. 1, Santiago Giraldo, 6-3, 7-6(2), 6-3 in the first rubber of the Davis Cup World Group playoff tie before a large crowd in Halifax Friday afternoon, the future is bright.

Pospisil only served at a 51 per cent rate, but he fired 15 aces and generally overpowered Giraldo, a 26-year-old whose current singles ranking of No. 33 is 10 spots above Pospisil's at the moment.

The win gives Canada a 1-0 lead in the tie, with Milos Raonic up next against Colombian No. 2 Alejandro Gonzalez.

"Sometimes it's difficult not to get too excited, so i have to kind of calm down a little bit and use the crowd at the right time. I did that well today," Pospisil said in an on-court interview after the victory.

The only slight hiccup on the day was when Pospisil was broken, giving Giralco a 4-2 lead in the second set. But he broke right back – or, more accurately, Giraldo broke himself with unforced errors. After that, it was smooth.

"I play my best tennis when I'm aggressive, and I was a little to passive at times trying to find my game. I hung in there in the second set," Pospisil said.
