Toronto Blue Jays’ J.A. Happ struck in head by line drive (VIDEO)

You can watch baseball every night and never think about how fearless pitchers are to face the risk of being struck by line drive — until something like what happened to the Toronto Blue Jays' J.A. Happ occurs.

In the second inning on Tuesday, Happ collapsed, bleeding, after being struck by a line drive by the Tampa Bay Rays' Desmond Jennings. It was a heart-in-mouth situation, with the entire ballpark silenced while paramedics and the medical staffs of each team attended to the stricken left-hander.

Happ regained consciousness after he was stabilized and stretchered off the field to be taken to the hospital. He waved to the crowd as he was taken off the field.

There was no update on Happ's condition as of 8:45 p.m. Eastern and it would not do to speculate about his injury. The incident was scarily similar when then-Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy was struck in the head by a line drive on Sept. 5, 2012, which necessitated two hours of cranial surgery. They were similar, but obviously each was unique.

There should be genuine concern for Happ's health. A timeline for his return to baseball isn't so important.
