Is Didier Drogba about to become the newest member of the Montreal Impact?

TSN 690's Noel Butler was the first to report that Montreal was the favourite to land the longtime Premier League star and owner Joey Saputo told TSN 690 on Monday he's hopeful the two sides can hammer out a deal:

"We are [in talks with Drogba]," Saputo said. "I had about 10 days ago or so some people from my organization had the opportunity to speak to Didier and his agent and his people along with some people from MLS. This past Friday I had the pleasure of speaking directly to Didier about the opportunity of coming to Montreal."

The Impact aren't the only Major League Soccer side interested in bringing Drogb aboard. The Chicago Fire are also making a push to sign Drogba, but according to reports Drogba would prefer to join the Impact as French is his native tongue. However, as the Fire hold Drogba's MLS discovery rights, Montreal would have to pay Chicago a fee if they want to acquire his rights.

Getting Drogba to Montreal would be a huge coup for the club. He's very charismatic and can directly connect with the club's French speaking fans.

At 37, Drogba isn't the same threat in front of goal he was in his prime but he can still find the back of the net, scoring seven times for EPL champions Chelsea in 38 mostly substitute appearances last season. Concerned by his age? Remember this: former Impact frontman Marco Di Vaio scored 20 goals in 2013 and was a finalist for the league MVP award when he too was 37 yeard old.
