Frank Dancevic, Peter Polansky, Nick Kyrgios and Jack Sock receive Rogers Cup wild cards
Teaming up with a Canadian to bring a Wimbledon trophy to Canada certainly did American Jack Sock no harm when it comes to the Rogers Cup.
The 21-year-old American is one of four main-draw wild card recipients announced Wednesday for the men's event, which begins Saturday in Toronto with the qualifying.
The others are Frank Dancevic and Peter Polansky, the two next-highest ranked Canadians after Milos Raonic and Sock's Wimbledon doubles partner Vasek Pospisil, and up-and-coming Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios.
It will be the 11th main draw appearance for Dancevic, now 29. A year ago, Polansky had go through the qualifying draw (and did), but this year he gets a pass straight in.
As for Kyrgios, he caused quite a stir at Wimbledon when he upset Richard Gasquet and two-time champion Rafael Nadal before losing to Raonic in the quarter-finals. The 19-year-old is currently ranked No. 69.
As for Sock, his singles ranking is at a career-best No. 60, and he most surely will team up again with Pospisil for the doubles in Toronto. The pair won the smaller ATP Tour event in Atlanta last week, but pulled out of the doubles this week in Washington, D.C. to concentrate on their singles. As it happens, Sock has to play Raonic in D.C. today (he also played him at Wimbledon).
Kyrgios and Sock are great choices; they're two of more exciting young players out there these days, and will bring some flash and dash to the event.
Four Canadians received wild cards into the qualifying. They include Filip Peliwo, who was gifted a main-draw wild card a year ago and won his first-round match when Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen retired in the third set before falling in three sets to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in the second round. The other three are Spanish-Canadian Steven Diez and two more from the Toronto area, Brayden Schnur (ranked No. 609) and Pavel Krainic (No. 688).
This is the fourth attempt in the qualifying for Diez and Krainik, who are seeking their first victories. Schnur, 19, will play the Rogers Cup for the first time after starring as a freshman at the University of North Carolina this year.
