First look at Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe in upcoming film and resemblance is clear

Filming for the much-anticipated movie depicting the 1980 Wimbledon final between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg has begun and we’re finally getting a glimpse into how the film might look.

The first photos have emerged of Shia LaBeouf playing a young McEnroe in the upcoming movie ‘McEnroe vs. Borg,’ which chronicles the epic Grand Slam final between the two rivals, and the resemblance between McEnroe and LaBeouf is striking — and yes, we're being completely serious.

With the red headband wrapped around that big mop of frizzy hair, paired with those retro tennis digs and, of course, a wooden racket in hand (albeit in the right one, while McEnroe played with his left), LaBeouf's likeness to a young McEnroe is undeniable — even if the man himself is unsure whether the actor can play him.

From Vanity Fair:

“It doesn’t seem like they are all that interested in talking with me,” McEnroe told John Clarke in an interview following this year’s U.S. Open. “I don’t know how you can do it without ever meeting me. Maybe you could talk to a few of my friends. I can barely remember what I was like 36 years ago when I was 21 years old. It could be entertaining. If it’s good, it’d be cool. Let’s hope.

McEnroe said in that same Vanity Fair interview that he hasn’t been consulted by the actor or director ahead of filming or seen the script: “I don’t know if they are planning on doing the whole movie without input or any type of arrangement from me or Bjorn,” he said.

McEnroe, who was known for his on-court outbursts, also told the magazine he had no input on the casting of LaBeouf, and didn’t seem to know much about him.

“Supposedly he’s crazy,” he said. “So maybe that works. I’ve never talked to him, so I don’t know how he could play me.”

Playing Bjorn Borg is Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason. The film is set to come out in 2017.
