Eugenie Bouchard has changed her mind, will join the Fed Cup party in Montreal next weekend

The extra spot Canadian Fed Cup captain Sylvain Bruneau left vacant in the hope that his No. 1 player, Genie Bouchard, would fill it wasn't for naught this time around.

The 21-year-old from Montreal had a last-minute change of heart, and has decided to lead the Canadian team against Romania as it fights to remain in World Group I for 2015.

Here is the official Bouchard quote from Tennis Canada's press release.

‘’It’s special to me that next week’s Fed Cup tie is taking place in my hometown of Montreal.  I hope that everyone comes out to watch some great tennis and support Team Canada,’’ she said.

Here is the quote from captain Bruneau.

“We are very happy that we will be able to count on Eugenie for our next Fed Cup tie. She is a great leader and the cornerstone of our team. Having our no. 1 player and home court advantage really helped us in 2014.”

The Canadians had nominated three players on a roster that can contain a maximum of four – just as they did for the first-round tie in Quebec City against the Czech Republic in February. Both times, they left the fourth spot open for Bouchard in the hope that she would have a change of heart.

Bouchard remained steadfast about not participating in Quebec City and she came under a lot of heat for it – from Canadians, tennis fans, the commentators on the television broadcast – even from some self-professed Genie Bouchard fans.

This time, asked about it in Charleston after her early exit from the Family Circle Cup, Bouchard didn't appear likely to change her mind about playing, coming as it does a couple of days before she's scheduled to play in a big clay-court event in Stuttgart, Germany.

"I think the answer right now is probably no," she said Wednesday.

The answer Sunday, a sudden but welcome one, was "yes".

That will mean four surface changes for Bouchard in four weeks – from the outdoor hard courts in Miami, to the Har-Tru in Charleston, to an indoor hard court at the Aréna Maurice-Richard, then immediately to the red clay indoors at the arena in Stuttgart.

It does mean Bouchard will be able to spend a week at home, surrounded by family, as she recharges for an assault on the clay-court segment of the season.

She joins Gabriela Dabrowski, Françoise Abanda and Sharon Fichman on the squad that will face Romania, which is without its top player, Simona Halep, but still will field a tough team.

Last week, the tie had sold approximately 500 tickets for each of the two days of competition - well short of capacity. The Aréna Maurice-Richard is a bit awkward for staging tennis - even though decades ago, it did just that. The court won't be in the centre of the floor surface but on one end; Tennis Canada intends to close off the upper tier, leaving the seating capacity for the tie at just over 3,000.

No doubt ticket sales should see a jump in the next few days. Serendipitously, The Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators aren't playing Saturday; indeed, they play only Sunday night in Ottawa.
