Duhamel-Radford 2nd after short program at worlds; Reynolds 15th after men’s short

The top Canadian duo of Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford posted a season-best score in their pairs short program at the world figure-skating championships in Saitama, Japan Wednesday, putting them in terrific position for a medal with the free skate set for Thursday.

Duhamel and Radford scored 77.01 points, just two points behind the leaders, Olympic bronze medalists Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany. Here's their program.

Kirsten-Moore Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, who finished fifth at the Olympics (with Duhamel and Radford coming in a disappointing seventh), sit in sixth place. Paige Lawrence and Rudi Swiegers are 12th.

All three teams easily made the top 16, necessary to compete in the free skate.

In the men's short program, skated later on Wednesday, the news wasn't nearly as good.

Kevin Reynolds, the top Canadian in the absence of Olympic silver medalist Patrick Chan, ended up 15th after the short program – just one spot ahead of 15-year-old world junior champion Nam Nguyen, making only his second appearance at an international senior event.

The third Canadian, Elladj Balde, was 22nd out of 32 skaters; all three, though, made the top-24 cut and will compete in the free skate.

The tiny, expressive Nguyen, who looked like a kid who took a wrong turn on the way to junior high as he competed among grown men, tripped and fell seconds into his program and under-rotated his first jump, a triple axel. He barely got off the ground on most of his jumps; yet he still barely finished behind Reynolds, who struggled.

Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, coached by Canadian Brian Orser (as is Nguyen), sits third after the short; his countryman Tatsuki Machida is the surprise leader. Spaniard Javier Fernandez – another Orser pupil - is second.
