CBC announcer mistakes Michael Phelps for Ryan Lochte during race
Michael Phelps was streaking away from the competition on his way to a 22nd Olympic gold medal – or was it Ryan Lochte?
Unfortunately, that's the mistake CBC announcer Elliotte Friedman made Thursday night while broadcasting the men's 200-metre individual medley. Phelps, in lane four, had a commanding lead after the final turn. However, Friedman thought it was Lochte, who was in lane five and ultimately finished fifth, leading to this awkward call:
So @FriedgeHNIC (calling Phelps v Lochte for CBC) picked a bad time to get his lanes mixed up pic.twitter.com/bz1RNNgCTp

Phelps ended up winning the race by over two seconds. Friedman, a pro's pro, owned up to his error and no one is feeling worse about it than him.
I'm sorry everyone. I blew it. No excuses

It wasn't the end of his nightmare, though. As Canada's Penny Oleksiak won gold, giving her four medals at these Games, Friedman confused her for fellow Canadian swimmer Emily Overholt.
Feel for @FriedgeHNIC . After Phelps screw-up he called Oleksiak Emily Overholt.

A tough night in the booth.
