Blue Jays' Marco Estrada placed on DL, out for All-Star game

TORONTO –  Marco Estrada will be recognized as an All-Star next week in San Diego but he won't pitch in the game. The Blue Jays placed Estrada on the disabled list Wednesday due to a back injury.

The move has ramifications on two rosters, as the 33-year-old starting pitcher was selected to the American League team along with teammates Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion while Michael Saunders among MLB's final vote candidates.

First for Toronto: right-hander Drew Hutchison gets the start Thursday against the Detroit Tigers in Estrada's place. Hutchison has spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Buffalo, where he's posted a 2.78 ERA in 15 starts. Reliever Bo Schultz has been called up from Buffalo to replace Estrada on the active roster.

Estrada's injury also opens up a spot for another AL pitcher at All-Star game on July 12 at Petco Park. Blue Jays starters Aaron Sanchez and J.A. Happ deserve to be in the conversation for the honour. Sanchez is 9-1 with a 2.94 ERA and Happ is 11-3 with a 3.54 ERA.
