Video: Stampeders punter rocked on big block, leaves Grey Cup
All Calgary Stampeders punter Rob Maver wanted to do was get down field, maybe help out on a tackle, and prove that kickers are "real" football players. For his troubles he got rocked by Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive end Justin Hickman and missed the rest of the Grey Cup with an abdomen injury.
Early in the third quarter Maver punted and it went right to dangerous Ticats returner Brandon Banks. As Banks got to the outside and looked destined for a big return, Maver got downfield to try to help with taking him down. Hickman came from behind and blindsided Maver with a devastating hit.
Maver stayed down on the field before walking off on his own power. It was later announced he had an abodmen injury and did not return to the game. No doubt a few sips from the Grey Cup will help him heal thanks to Calgary's 20-16 win over Hamilton.
It's not uncommon for kickers and punters to help out on coverage but often than not they make the highlight reels for the wrong reasons. Former CFL offensive lineman Sandy Annunziata took to Twitter to remind kickers where their place is.
Can someone please remind @CFL kickers they're not football players and bad things WILL happen when they pretend to be. #CrushingBlock
