Continuing on with our Three Stars series, here's a look at the top offensive, defensive and special teams players of Labour Day weekend.

First star/offensive player of the week: Jon Cornish, running back, Calgary Stampeders: In just his second week back following an early-season concussion that's made him miss most of this campaign, Cornish delivered an incredible performance Monday against Edmonton. He collected 163 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, averaging 9.6 yards per carry and leading the Stampeders to a 28-13 victory. Cornish hasn't played much this year thanks to injury, but this performance showed what he's capable of, and why he was named the league's most outstanding player last season.

(Honourable mentions: Zach Collaros, QB, Hamilton; Brandon Whitaker, RB, Montreal; Adarius Bowman, SB, Edmonton.)

Second star/defensive player of the week: Ricky Foley, defensive end, Saskatchewan Roughriders: Saskatchewan's defensive line was the biggest part of their 35-30 win over Winnipeg Sunday, and Foley delivered the most crucial performance there. He had two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the day. Opposing offences are starting to focus on CFL sack leader John Chick at the other end of the Riders' line, but you ignore Foley at your peril.

(Honourable mentions: Tyron Brackenridge, DB, Saskatchewan; Gabriel Knapton, DE, Montreal; Shawn Lemon, DE, Calgary.)

Third star/special teams player of the week: Swayze Waters, punter/kicker, Toronto Argonauts: Waters' contributions mostly didn't show up on the scoreboard this week, as the Argonauts didn't attempt a single field goal in a 13-12 loss to Hamilton Monday. His only scoring play was a 77-yard rouge off a punt, which was impressive in its own right. What really stood out were the two punts he dropped inside the Tiger-Cats' one-yard line, though, both of which resulted in subsequent Hamilton safeties. On the day, Waters had 13 punts for 696 yards, an average of 53.5 yards per punt. He was a crucial reason why the Argos were able to hang in that game despite their offensive struggles, and with a different late-game strategy, he might have been able to tie or win it for them. He didn't get the chance, but that's on the Argos' coaches, not him. Waters' consistent flipping of field position was the primary reason Monday's game was even close.

(Honourable mentions: Willie Jefferson, DE, Edmonton; Troy Stoudermire, PR/KR, Winnipeg; Lirim Hajrullahu, P/K, Winnipeg.)

Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Jon Cornish, running back, Calgary Stampeders: Cornish's exploits have been discussed above, but it's notable that they're far from a one-off. He's consistently delivered a high yards-per-carry average, averaging 7.3 YPC in both 2010 and 2011 (as part of a backfield tandem with Joffrey Reynolds) and 7 YPC last year as Calgary's featured back. He's averaging a still-stellar 6.5 YPC this year in limited playing time. Giving the ball to Cornish usually leads to good things, and he'll likely be a key piece for the Stampeders down the stretch.

(Honourable mentions: Ricky Foley, DE, Saskatchewan; Brian Bulcke, DT, Hamilton; Winnipeg; Lirim Hajrullahu, P/K, Winnipeg.)
