Three Stars: Henry Burris, John Bowman and Rico Murray top Week Twenty

Three Stars: Henry Burris, John Bowman and Rico Murray top Week Twenty

Welcome to the final 2015 regular-season edition of the Three Stars, our recurring look at each week's top performers on offence, defence and special teams. This time, we're examining the top showings from Week Twenty's games.

First star/offensive player of the week: Henry Burris, quarterback, Ottawa Redblacks: The Redblacks' 44-28 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Saturday gave them the East title, and Burris' dazzling performance was key to that victory. He completed 28 of his 37 passes (75.7 per cent) for 369 yards and six touchdowns, albeit with one interception. It was a great way to cap off the 40-year-old Temple product's best season of his 15 in the CFL; he led the league with a career-high 5,703 passing yards (Calgary's Bo Levi Mitchell was second with 4,551), and finished with a career-best 70.9 per cent completion rate and 26 touchdowns against 13 picks. Burris should win the league's Most Outstanding Player award, and he's been a huge part of Ottawa's turnaround from a 2-16 mark last year to an 11-7 one and a first-place finish this year.

(Honourable mentions: Greg Ellingson, WR, Ottawa; Tyrell Sutton, RB, Montreal; Ryan Smith, WR, Saskatchewan.)

Second star/defensive player of the week: John Bowman, defensive end, Montreal Alouettes: Bowman delivered five tackles and three sacks in the Alouettes' 30-24 overtime loss to Saskatchewan Sunday, capping off a remarkable season for him. The 32-year-old Wingate product and 10-year CFL veteran was declared a healthy scratch for two games early on by then-Montreal head coach Tom Higgins, likely part of what eventually got Higgins fired midseason, but finished as the CFL leader with 19 sacks despite playing just 16 games. Bowman's performance was one of the highlights of a 6-12 season for the Alouettes.

(Honourable mentions: Eric Norwood, DE, Hamilton; Euclid Cummings, DE, Toronto; Damaso Munoz, LB, Ottawa.)

Third star/special teams player of the week: Rico Murray, defensive back/cover teams, Hamilton Tiger-Cats: Murray was a key part of the Ticats' comeback effort against Ottawa Sunday, lining up behind the punter and sprinting downfield to haul in an onside punt for a touchdown, just the third such play since 1999. It was the second time the Ticats had pulled that off this year, and their unconventional special teams moves are a tribute both to the coaching prowess of coordinator Jeff Reinebold and the athleticism of players such as Murray and Brandon Stewart (who posted this year's earlier onside punt TD). Murray's in his fourth CFL season out of Kent State, and his third with Hamilton. He's become an important piece for the Tiger-Cats.

(Honourable mentions: Terrell Sinkfield, PR/KR, Hamilton; Rob Maver, P, Calgary; James Yurichuk, LB/ST, Toronto.)

Bonus star/Canadian player of the week: Anthony Parker, wide receiver, Calgary Stampeders: Parker was terrific in the Stampeders' 28-7 win over B.C. Saturday, catching four passes for a game-high 122 yards and a touchdown. The Calgary Dinos' product hasn't been heavily featured most of the time during his five seasons with the Stampeders so far, but he does have a career-high 443 receiving yards this season, and Saturday showed what he can do when regularly targeted. He may be a bigger part of their offence going forward.

(Honourable mentions: Chris Ackie, DB, Montreal; Jamaal Westerman, DE, Winnipeg; Keith Shologan, DT, Ottawa.)
