Journal de Montreal's Marc de Foy makes gay joke about Michael Sam, apologizes

Less than a day after Michael Sam's official introduction as a member of the Montreal Alouettes and the CFL's first openly gay player, we have the first media outlet making a stupid stereotypical joke about him. Marc de Foy of the French-language Journal de Montreal wrote a piece on Sam's Tuesday introductory press conference that included a joke about his sexual orientation. Here's the passage in question:

"'J’ai hâte de remettre l’équipement pour aller frapper quelqu’un!,' a-t-il lancé. Venant de la bouche d’un homosexuel, ça fait drôle à entendre, avouons-le."

That loosely translates to "'I'm excited to get out there and hit someone,' strange to hear coming from a homosexual." That's bizarre to see; it's a joke relying on antiquated and untrue stereotypes of gay men as physically effeminate, and it's one that should be completely unacceptable to see in print in a Canadian newspaper in 2015. de Foy has since apologized on Twitter and in the paper (translation via Yahoo's Stephanie Myles):

My story on Michael Sam has tongues wagging today for the wrong reasons. This is the third time I've written about him, and never once did it ever cross my mind to put him down. Quite the opposite; I have the utmost respect for the man. Elsewhere on this page, you'll find a profile I did on him for last Saturday's paper.

But in writing, "it's pretty weird to hear that, coming from a homosexual", I crossed a line I never should have crossed. As well, I sincerely apologize to those I offended. Believe me, that was not my intention..

It's good to see that de Foy's apologized, but this is still ridiculous and hurtful. There's no call for using gay stereotypes in a story about a football player who happens to be gay. It's also not a great welcome to town for Sam. Yes, de Foy's comments are highly unrepresentative of Montreal, but seeing a major media outlet print something so thoughtless doesn't help matters. The vast majority of the Montreal media, and the Canadian media as a whole, have covered Sam's story fairly and respectfully so far, but people who screw up are always remembered more than those who do something well. Here's hoping de Foy's comments are the only stupid ones we see about Sam this season.

(Note: This post initially used Google Translate for Foy's apology; it has been updated with Myles' more accurate translation.)
