With “Cornish Flakes”, the Stampeders get in on the cereal-box action
We've seen several CFL players get their own food tie-ins over the years, from Andy Fantuz's "Fantuz Flakes" to Darian Durant's "Dari-Os" to Weston Dressler's "All-Dressler Chips." However, all of those players were with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. While other CFL clubs have done plenty of food and beverage tie-ins of their own, the Roughriders have generally taken the lead on player-branded products. This year, though, their rivals in Calgary are getting in on the act, with the Stampeders and running back Jon Cornish (the CFL's reigning Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian, plus the recipient of the 2013 Lou Marsh Award as Canada's top athlete) teaming up with southern Alberta Co-op stores for "Cornish Flakes." (With that kind of natural name synergy, it's amazing it took this long to make these.) You can see a picture of Cornish chowing down on the cereal above, and here's a bigger view of the box:
It's nice to see Cornish getting what should be his due as one of the CFL's top athletes. There are plenty of promotional opportunities for businesses to work with CFL teams and players, but companies have historically taken advantage of them at a much smaller rate than they do with other professional leagues; it's cool to see efforts like this changing that. Moreover, this is for a good cause; a portion of the sales of these (plus other Stampeders products, including chips, hamburger buns, and trail mix) is going to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. So it's a cool way to promote the Stamps and one of their best players while helping charity in the process. Well done, Calgary. We'll see if other teams will follow suit with similar ideas.
