Have we seen the last of Marcos Maidana in the ring?

The boxing world hasn’t seen or heard much from Marcos Maidana ever since the Argentinean hit the proverbial jackpot when he fought Floyd Mayweather twice in 2014.

Despite losing both times, Maidana fared well in the eyes of fight fans and did even better with his bank account by earning nearly $5 million. And after pictures of Maidana appearing to look a bit heavy hit the web, suffice it to say that Maidana is enjoying the fruits of his labor.

But sooner or later he’ll fight again, right? Not according to his trainer, Robert Garcia.

Garcia, whose fighter, Brandon Rios, faces Timothy Bradley on Saturday, spoke to BoxingScene and suggested that there’s a possibility that we may not see Maidana in a ring anytime soon, if ever again.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he never fights again and I support him 100 percent,” Garcia said. “He made a lot of money on the Mayweather fights and [Adrien] Broner fight … who can blame him?”

For a fighter such as Maidana, whom Garcia says never truly loved boxing, his victory against Broner and subsequent fights against Mayweather served as the perfect early retirement plan.

Although there are several entertaining options for Maidana if he chooses to step back into the ring – Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter and a rematch with Adrien Broner – it doesn’t appear he is interested in getting in shape and fighting again. He married his longtime girlfriend over the summer and seems content with his life as a husband.

“He never had love for the sport,” Garcia said. “It’s not like Mayweather, who loves the attention enough to do it for the fame and money. He’s comfortable at home.”

Several months ago there were reports that questioned Maidana’s future in the sport, and Garcia suggested back then that it would take nearly half a year for the former two-division world champion to get back down to his fighting weight of 147 pounds. Today, Garcia appears to be happy that the 32-year-old has found happiness outside of a boxing ring.

But if Maidana ever wants to lace up the gloves again, he’d gladly be in his corner.

“I’d tell him to relax and enjoy it and if he wants to come back and then wants my services, I’ll be more than happy to help him,” Garcia said. “But I also don’t want him to be forced to do something because his manager, his trainer and his promoter are forcing him to do it. He’s going to have to do it because he wants to.”
