49ers use massive second half rally to beat Lions, secure trip to Super Bowl

Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are headed to the Super Bowl.

It took a ridiculous rally, but the San Francisco 49ers are headed to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers climbed out of a 17-point halftime hole to stun the Detroit Lions 34-31 on Sunday afternoon at Levi's Stadium in the NFC championship game. The win officially sealed their spot in Super Bowl LVIII.

The Lions dominated the ball and the scoreboard in what was a stunning first half in San Francisco. They won the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball while rumbling to 148 first-half rushing yards against a strong 49ers defensive front en route to a 24-7 halftime lead. But then the third quarter hit.

The 48ers erupted for a 17-point outburst in the third quarter, thanks to a wild catch and eventual touchdown from Brandon Aiyuk and another from Christian McCaffrey — which came after a brutal Lions fumble. That completely wiped away the Lions' 17-point halftime lead. The 49ers took their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard field goal, too.

After coming up with a huge stop, Brock Purdy and McCaffrey came up with huge runs to keep the 49ers' drive alive and eventually set up an Elijah Mitchell touchdown. That put them up by 10 points late in the fourth quarter. While Jared Goff led the Lions on one last touchdown drive, it came too late. Their onside kick failed, which sealed the three-point win for the 49ers.

The 49ers will now get the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. The Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens earlier on Sunday in the AFC championship game to reach their fourth Super Bowl in the last five seasons.
