Royal Canadian Mint releases quarter commemorating Stanley Cup's 125th anniversary

Canadians tend to drop a whole lot of coin on their favorite pastime.

Now hockey-loving Canucks will be able to collect a limited edition quarter commemorating the 125-year anniversary of the Stanley Cup. The Royal Canadian Mint recently tweeted out a photo of the newly-released coin, which began circulating across the country on St. Patrick’s day.

The back side of the new quarter, which was designed by British Columbia artist Steve Hepburn, depicts the Stanley Cup with two hockey players on each side — one in modern day equipment and the other in what was the standard hockey uniform in 1892.

“The celebration of the 125^th anniversary of the Stanley Cup is a perfect example of the pride and excitement Canadians will feel throughout the experience of Canada 150 and the Government of Canada is proud that the Royal Canadian Mint has created a special circulation coin in its honour,” said the Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance.

Lord Stanley was the Governor General of Canada when he introduced the trophy that was originally awarded to Canada’s top-ranked amateur hockey club. As the years went on, the NHL claimed the trophy as its own and the iconic piece of hardware is now arguably the most recognizable trophy in all of professional sports.

A total of 12.5 million of the special coins were put into circulation on March 17.
