NHL Three Stars: Rinne, Price record shutouts; Aho boosts Canes
No. 1 Star: Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators
The Predators shut out the Anaheim Ducks 5-0 behind two goals from James Neal and 27 stops from Rinne. Up 1-0 after a late first period goal, Nashville scored three times in a span of 4:47 to open up the game. Rinne now has 41 career shutouts.
No. 2 Star: Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens
Price continued his fantastic start by making 25 saves as the Canadiens blanked the Detroit Red Wings 5-0 for their fifth straight win. The shutout was Price’s second of the season and 38th of his career. Andrew Shaw had a three-point evening and Shea Weber blasted home his sixth goal of the year.
No. 3 Star: Sebastian Aho, Carolina Hurricanes
Aho scored the first two goals of his NHL career to help the Canes beat the Washington Capitals 5-1. The rookie added an assist for a three-point night while Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Staal both had a goal and three helpers.
Honorable Mention: Goals from Nick Lappin, Kyle Palmieri and John Moore helped the New Jersey Devils double up the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 and sweep a back-to-back, home-and-home set. Taylor Hall chipped in a pair of assists and now has four points in his last three games … Brayden Schenn’s goal 8:43 into the third period broke a 2-2 tie and helped the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild … Sidney Crosby scored his 10th of the season and Matt Murray stopped 35 shots as the Pittsburgh Penguins downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1. Frederik Andersen made 45 stops in the loss, including this great glove save on Chris Kunitz:
Patrick Marleau, Tommy Wingels and Marc-Edouard Vlasic helped the San Jose Sharks to a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Marleau’s goal came after two video reviews that were trying to determine whether the Sharks forward interfered with Ben Bishop … Jonathan Marchessault’s goal with 13.6 seconds left forced overtime and Denis Malgin ended things as the Florida Panthers edged the New York Islanders 3-2 to complete a comeback from a 2-0 deficit.
Another offensive explosion from the Columbus Blue Jackets saw Cam Atkinson finish with four assists, Nick Foligno record three points and five others finish with two points during an 8-4 win over the St. Louis Blues. Markus Nutivaara chipped in his first NHL goal for the Blue Jackets … Columbus now has 45 goals on the season, with 18 of them coming in two games … Ryan Spooner and David Pastrnak scored 1:50 apart in the second period to help the Boston Bruins get by the Arizona Coyotes 2-1. Tuukka Rask made 31 saves to improve to 9-1-0 on the season … The New York Rangers built up a 4-0 lead by the middle of the second period and Henrik Lundqvist made 35 saves in a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Michael Grabner notched his eighth of the season, while Jimmy Vesey put home his seventh.
