NHL Three Stars: O'Reilly's 4-point night; Bailey, Sutter fire OT winners

No. 1 Star: Ryan O’Reilly, Buffalo Sabres

The Sabres’ center had a four-point night with two goals and two assists in a 6-2 drubbing of the Edmonton Oilers. One of his goals was a shot from center ice. It was the Sabres’ first win of the season.

No. 2 Star: Josh Bailey, New York Islanders

In overtime, Bailey zipped into the offensive zone went around the Anaheim Ducks’ defense and buried a shot past John Gibson to give his team a 3-2 win. The Islanders were up 2-0, but allowed two third period goals by the Ducks, which pushed the game to overtime. The victory for New York was their first of the season. The Ducks remained winless at 0-2-1.

No. 3 Star: Brandon Sutter, Vancouver Canucks

Sutter scored the overtime winner to help the Canucks cap off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory against the Carolina Hurricanes. Vancouver was down 3-0 at the 5:28 mark of the second period before starting their comeback. Sutter’s goal came just 32 seconds into OT. It was his first goal since Jan. 26 of last year. He also added an assist

Honorable Mention: Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen notched three assists and teammate Brian Gionta scored two goals … Sabres forward Kyle Okposo scored a goal and added an assist in his season opener … Carolina Hurricanes forward Teuvo Teravainen scored his first goal with his new team in the loss to the Canucks. Teammate Victor Rask scored his second goal of the season … Vancouver defenseman Ben Hutton tied the game at the 14:10 mark of the third period and Canucks forward Markus Granlund scored a goal and added an assist … New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak stopped 24 of 26 shots on goal to pick up the win … Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck notched two assists and John Tavares scored a goal … Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf scored a goal and added an assist … Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler scored a goal and added an assist.

Dishonorable Mention: Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot allowed six goals on 23 shots on goal.
