Banff National Park has issued a cougar warning for the Tunnel Mountain Campground area.

The park is recommending that people who are in the area take special caution to avoid encountering a cougar, by travelling in groups, staying vigilant at dawn and dusk, and carrying bear spray.

The warning has been issued for all trails, facilities and campgrounds within the Tunnel Mountain area and along the Tunnel Mountain bench, which are adjacent to the Banff townsite.

Park staff are advising people who do see a cougar to face it and retreat slowly, make themselves bigger and be aggressive and make noise.

Sightings should be reported to the Banff 24/7 emergency dispatch at 403-762-1470.
