If the hype machine for Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews wasn’t already cranked up, it may be in danger of overheating after his first game of NHL hockey on Wednesday night.

Matthews scored on his first NHL shot on goal against the Ottawa Senators, as Zach Hyman found the first overall pick in last summer’s draft in front of the Ottawa net for his first career goal at 8:21:

Then Matthews put on a show for his second goal … on his second shot:

The Leafs rookie stole the puck from Senators forward Mark Stone, and then dangled through Mike Hoffman, who attempted to check him along the boards. Matthews skated through that with ease. Then it was defenseman Erik Karlsson’s turn, and Matthews embarrassed him, stealing the puck along the boards again and skating in on goal. He walked in, snapped a shot and beat Craig Anderson. Again.

Impressions are made quickly in an NHL season. On one play, Auston Matthews may have simultaneously won the Calder Trophy and cost Erik Karlsson the Norris.

He wasn’t done!

At 1:25 of the second period, Auston Matthews scored his third goal of the game … on his third shot!

Three shots. Three goals. His parents seemed happy.

Quite the debut for Matthews. You can tell because Leafs fans are already insufferable.

UPDATE: Make that four goals for Matthews in his debut.
