Alouettes guard Woodruff retires after missing most of season with concussion

MONTREAL - Montreal Alouettes guard Andrew Woodruff has retired after playing in only two games last season due to a concussion, the CFL club announced Wednesday.

Woodruff, 28, spent his five-year career in Montreal, which drafted him in the second round in 2008 from Boise State.

The Victoria native started 49 of his 61 regular season games. He won Grey Cups in 2009 and 2010.

"Unfortunately, Andrew has decided to hang up his cleats just as he was starting to peak and play his best ball," coach and general manager Jim Popp said in a statement.

The Alouettes also signed two-year contracts with two Canadians — linebacker Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard and slotback Chris Dobko.

Beaulieu-Richard joined Montreal from Hamilton's practice roster in August and played one game, while Dobko helped the University of Calgary to an 8-0 record and a berth in the Vanier Cup game this season. The St. Albert, Alta., native was the Dinos' top receiver with 33 catches for 526 yards in only six games.
