A North Carolina man who reported the death of his missing 17-year-old girlfriend has been arrested and charged in connection with the case, authorities said.

Joshua Biles, 20, was charged with felony obstruction and concealment of a death after Albemarle police claimed he called 911 around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, May 10, to report the death of his girlfriend Baylee Carver and that he disposed of her body using a red Honda Civic, according to local stations WSOC-TV, WBTV and WCNC-TV.

"[Biles] spent some time with SBI investigators as well as our detectives," Albemarle Police Chief Jason Bollhorst said, according to WCNC. "There is some information that’s included in the investigation that provided us with detailed areas to search."

Investigators from several law enforcement agencies then spent the next four days searching for Baylee Carver's remains in the surrounding region, WBTV reports, citing police. It wasn’t until around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, that authorities recovered remains confirmed to be Carver’s in Cabarrus County, per the outlet. An autopsy is reportedly pending.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Baylee Carver. As they mourn their loss, our hearts are with them during this difficult time,” Chief Bollhorst said, per WBTV. “The Albemarle Police Department is grateful for all of the assistance and resources provided throughout the course of this search. The investigation is still ongoing.”

Unspecified court documents obtained by WCNC-TV state that Biles allegedly moved Carver’s body from his home to another location. Investigators also found evidence at the home that led them to believe the 17-year-old had “obvious wounds to the body indicating an unnatural death,” according to the documents cited by the outlet.

However, police said, Biles did not admit to killing Carver, WSOC-TV reports. He reportedly remains in jail with a $250,000 bond. It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Meanwhile, Carver’s relatives are grieving the unexpected death of their loved one, including her father, Justin Carver, who pleaded for the public’s help during the search, according to WSOC-TV.

“I wish I could’ve done more,” he told the outlet.

Bennie Carver, the victim’s grandfather, added, “It’s hard but I’m glad it’s over with. The hunt and everything. We prayed justice be done,” WSOC-TV reports.

Emily Lowery, a longtime friend of Carver’s, told WCNC that she was hoping for the best.

“I don’t think anybody wanted to think that was real,” she told the outlet. “She’s a very uplifting person. I’ve never heard her talk bad about anyone.”
