Mexican referee gets five-match ban for showing two yellow cards at once

    Behold!

Tigres won their first title in 29 years by beating Santos 4-1 over the two legs of the Mexico Primera Division apertura final in December. In the 56th minute of the second leg, referee Marco Antonio "Chiquidracula" Rodriguez decided to increase his card-showing efficiency in a match that included seven yellows and three straight reds by showing two yellows at the same time.

This, of course, is not conventional procedure for referees, who are supposed to book players one at a time. So this week it was announced that Rodriguez's flair for the dramatic and use of the extra yellow card he brought earned him a five-match ban. Said FMF secretary general Decio de Maria (via Univision):

"The situation of having drawn two yellow cards at the same time is outside the role, not something that is considered in the arbitration rules and is considered as if he had not responded to what happened and did not sanction it."

OK, so two yellow cards at the same time is frowned upon. Next time, Rodriguez should just pull out one giant yellow card for the both of them.

It was a silly move and one that Rodriguez should've known would draw unwanted attention, but a five-match ban seems a bit harsh for an act as trivial as this. Even Santos' Carlos Morales, one of the players booked in that moment, couldn't hide his enjoyment of the referee's showmanship. Then again, a match as big as this one probably wasn't the place to get cute with it.

Then if he's so bad, why do they send him to do Copa Libertadores? Then again, in South America we also send our worst refs to do Libertadores.

In every sport there seem to be officials who begin to think it's about them, that fans actually come to see them work! The best, most respected referees set a firm, consistent tone early regarding what will be tolerated and then become invisible... a perfectly refereed game is one where you completely forget about them. I can't say that is ever the case with this dude who seems to go way lout of his way inject himself into the picture whenever possible.... which probably has something to do with the impeccably greased and manicured wig. Back off Chiqui-D, I'm trying to watch a game!

Ok..for you football and I mean (soccer) haters who think my sport is the worst....at least we play more than one game a week, there's not sixty men on a team, we don't suck on oxygen after running 20 yards, WE ACTUALLY USE OUR FEET, no half time music concerts and we actually have a world champ....so go watch that SORRY excuse for a sport called football.

But you do role around on the ground like you were shot when you get bumped. haha
Not a huge fan of football either but you would amazed how tiring physical contact is on top of running, skating or whatever.

So you're saying that there is no "diving" or "flopping" in other sports(NHL, NBA, NFL) in order to gain an unfair advantage? Hmmm, interesting.

No question it is a major violation of referee mechanics to display two cards at the same time, even more so to two different players. Pretty ridiculous, in fact. There are some variants in High School sports, but as a rule, we are taught to display only one card at a time. Even when issuing a second caution (same player, which BTW, can occur pretty quickly, esp. if there is Dissent after a Caution for another offense, e.g, Unsporting Behavior), we should display first the yellow caution, tuck it away, and then show the Red (Orange as a way of describing a Soft Red) . When dealing with two players that have "earned" Cautions ... not all that unusual actually ... the ref should deal with one player at a time, displaying the appropriate card, or cards, that were merited, and then address the second player for his card-able offense .... If there has been Serious Foul Play or Violent Conduct, that issue should be addressed first ... to remove a potentially volatile element form the field, but either, the ref should handle each player separately.

Running 45 halves with aggressive contact is too much of a sport for fat, out of shape American athletes who try to belittle the sport because they CAN'T play it. You can be fat and slow and still hit a baseball or tackle someone nearby. Those jokers could never last a tennis set, let alone a match. Laughing at Americans. Yes, I'm American.
