Watch Shawn Thornton embarrass a Vancouver columnist on Boston TV (Video)

In that brutal game last Saturday, Dale Weise of the Vancouver Canucks fought Nathan Horton of the Boston Bruins. Later in the same period, Boston pugilist Shawn Thornton wanted to throw down with Weise, but the Canuck denied him the chance, later citing exhaustion and that Thornton isn't "really the type of guy I want to fight."

Tony Gallagher of The Province served as Weise's proxy on Comcast SportsNet New England's Sticks and Stones segment, arguing that it was "unethical" for Thornton to challenge a guy to his second fight in a period. Everything was going well … until Shawn Thornton himself responded to flustered scribe.

Eh, what's the difference between 40 and 20 pounds, really? That was like seeing a Republican strategist bash the Obama administration on CNN, and then the President suddenly walks on set with a dozen folders of declassified documents to refute him.

More interesting than Thornton schooling Gallagher on the nuances of fight making were Gallagher's comments when asked why everyone hates the Canucks.

"Here's what I don't understand. I don't understand how a team can be so hated … I understand they have a couple of vexing guys like Burrows and Lapierre. They're agitators, just about every team has a couple of them. But they have no toughness. Normally, teams that are hated have a horde of tough guys that just maraud and punch other teams into oblivion. How can you be hated when you have no toughness?"

This is, perhaps, the greatest window into the soul of the Vancouver Canucks we've seen in quite some time.

Yes, the Broad Street Bullies were hated — in the 1970s. Today, as Brian Burke famously put it, the rats are running the League. So when someone steps up to exterminate the rats, they're the heroes.

Hence, the Boston Bruins were celebrated for manhandling the Canucks last June.

But what Gallagher's really saying here: The Canucks aren't tough. They're weak. Hence, they're not the villains, they're the victims, in his eyes. And now we get right to the core of it.

When Alain Vigneault or Mike Gillis or any player decides to be the cowardly heel, it reinforces their reputation as a hated franchise. When they complain about something the other team did or something the NHL didn't do to remedy the matter, it reinforces that reputation.

The real delusion here is the part of Gallagher himself. The media is seen, at times, as a conduit for the community. So when Gallagher launches into a conspiratorial rant about the refs favoring the Bruins because of Colin Campbell and fear of losing their jobs; or the Phoenix Coyotes getting all the calls because the NHL owns them; or that the NHL threw a playoff series in the Chicago Blackhawks' favor because they wanted more games on VERSUS and were afraid of their ownership; or all of his other X-Files, it reflects poorly on the fan base and the team.

Tony Gallagher is the biggest promoter of the "woe is us"/Vancouver against the world/"It's a C-O-N-spiracy!" nonsense that makes their team and its fan base seem like tin-foil hat wearing crackpots.

It's a reputation that — wait for it — sorta kinda makes them a hated team.

Here's the Legion of Blog defending their guy:

    - I thought it was kind of lame to ambush Tony like that with Shawn Thornton. I understand that many people love the idea of an athlete getting a chance to fire back at the media, but it still feels like this lacks professional courtesy. All this does is drag this rivalry into the mud a bit and make it seem even more like a school yard situation. Any time I find myself thinking "This reminds of something Damien Cox would do" I know it's not a good sign.

    - Why doesn't Michael Felger at least debate and argue with Tony on this main point instead of just running to Shawn Thornton to jump in? Because of ratings most likely. And when a show values ratings above all else, I find it hard to take them seriously when they discuss the integrity of the game.

    Same goes for their guest.

That Legion of Blog guy defending Gallagher doesn't know what he's talking about, Mike Felger told Gallagher that Shawn Thornton was in studio BEFORE the interview started. He was well aware of what was going on and what he was getting into, there was no ambush

Yeah, even canuck fans think Gallagher's a retard. I love the Vancouver Province but he sure has some perplexing views. Iain MacIntyre is far more in tune with the team, I'm sure he wouldn't have been embarrassed like Gallagher was.
Hey, I'm an avid Vancouver fan but Thornton is right. Unfortunately for Wiese, he is our "enforcer" if you will.. and it is his responsibility to fight Thornton there. By not doing so, he certainly re-inforces the notion that the Canucks aren't a tough team.

Thankfully a lot of Canucks fans realize Tony Gallagher knows nothing of hockey. Couldn't break down a game to save his life yet feels the need to use adjectives to describe every player in the NHL and seem together a season as one big conspiracy.
The guys a complete dork that doesn't understand athletic competition. To him, athletics is decided in a boardroom just like 9/11 was decided in the bush oval office.

Words don't do justice my hate for this puke and that horrid radio station team1040.

Ugh, I hope that people know that for every Canuck fan that likes Tony Gallagher, there's two of us that wish he would go join up with Jesse Ventura and hunt down the lizard men or something.

Dale Weise is billed as 6'2'', 210lbs. Shawn Thornton's listed as 6'2'', 217lbs. Tony Gallagher is a joke.

Nobody is arguing Gallagher is a joke. If you judge fan bases by a crazy media member then every fan base looks crazy.

Someone on here called Thornton a liar, writing that he's never fought 3x in the same game. Actually he has, as a pro twice, once in the AHL, once in the National League.
AHL: April 7th, 2001 Laitre, Henry, Norton
NHL: Sept 12, 1999: Brad Brown (2x), Nathan Perrott
Over twenty times hes fought twice in game, mostly at the AHL level.
The much maligned "hockey fight fan" has so much more institutional knowledge than the run of the mill fan that posts on here, for sure.
      • Cmoney 4 months ago
did ya hear that? that was the sound of gallagher backpeddling from hearing facts
      • Bryan 4 months ago
        In the same period?
      • Sarah D 4 months ago
Bryan- In the Sept. 12th NHL game he fought twice in the first and once in the third, a draw and two losses, for what its worth(I believe it was pre-season). Crazy thing is Perrott fought four times that game.

This game is just the gift that keeps on giving :)

So let me get this straight... 6'2, 217lb Shawn Thornton is too big for 6'2, 210lb Dale Weise but 6'2, 229lb Nathan Horton isn't?

That makes perfect sense! (all numbers per NHL)
      • TBTF 4 months ago
The more relevant information is that Thornton is a known and respected fighter in the NHL. Horton is not. Last I checked I don't exactly recall hearing Weise's name in fighting cicles. Do you really blame him for picking a fight with Horton and not Thornton?
      • Gene K 4 months ago
Weise is quoted right in the article that Thornton is not the kind of guy he likes to fight, meaning he didn't want to get his #$%$ kicked by a tough guy. Comparing weights was a dumb argument for Gallagher to make.

I'm a Canuck fan and I think Weise should have fought Thornton b/c it sure looked like he was egging him on. I do try to call it as I see it.

It's obvious why the Canucks are hated. It's not that their great agitators, dirty, super tough, great fighters, or even because they're a good team. It's because they're "weasely" as the commentator put it. But don't blame the players! I think it's coaching/management. Kesler and Burrows were reigned in by Canuck management to stop the chirping and extra stuff. They became better hockey players, but they're are not allowed to back up their agitation. AV's strategy is to get teams to take stupid penalties and beat them on the PP. It happened in the last game vs Boston, but didn't happen in the SCF. I get why AV would do it since you have one of the best PP in the league.

What I don't like about the strategy is that it makes the Canucks look like a bunch of pushovers, so the rest of the league and fans doesn't respect them. Plus IMO, it isn't worth losing a player like Salo (and Ebbetts) just to win 1 game. It doesn't work in a 7 game playoff series as we all saw. If you're going to lose a player, make the other team lose a player in the same way, instead of a suspension.

So I think Weise is "coached" into egging Thornton into taking a penalty for roughing, so that the Canucks can get another PP. Refs didn't bite, both got penalties, Canucks look like pansies, and the coaches say "oh well, maybe next time". It is a strategy to win, but there is a price that you pay. It just depends if you think it's worth it. Anything for a Cup, right?
      • Swift's Toole Box 4 months ago
there is something missing from that equation.
      • Dutch 4 months ago
Good point, also the Refs are hip to this stuff and they swallow the whistle on a lot of stuff just due to rep. Burrows is a perfect example.

Why does everyone think NON fighting is "whimpy" ?? I have watched a lot of hockey and the Sedins dont run away from fighting in the corners. I havent seen any canuck player shy away from that in any game. I am sure 99% of the posters on all sites knocking the canucks and the Sedins would crumble after most of the hits they take out there. Other teams have picked up on this and look stupid, aka thorton in SJ with the finger wag. Theses are guys getting paid MILLIONS to skate and play a game they love. Everyone expects the top players to be protected, unless your not american or canadian born. Bring it on Haters, the cancucks are the best team in the NHL and for years to come.

The Legion of Blog is cracked. This wasn't an "ambush." The host and Thornton didn't gang up on Gallagher. Heck, Gallagher said himself he welcomed the show bringing on Thornton. I thought Thornton explained his actions pretty reasonably. He didn't insult the guy, he didn't lose his temper or shout him down. He just stated his position and stated why he thought Gallagher was wrong. And, for the record, I'm not a fan of either team, so I have no dog in the fight.
      • Leon 4 months ago
No, that was #$%$ and completely unprofessional. What was Gallagher supposed to do chicken out?
    • kevin  •  Winthrop, United States  •  4 months ago
Gallager is full of it. For example, the weight difference was not 40 pounds, or even 20 pounds; try 7 pounds (210 v.s. 217) per the official team sites. They're both heavyweights.

I am a pittsburgh native and a penguins fan. I watch every Pens game, plus a few others each week, but I honestly pay very little attention to the hockey media, and I think I am better off for avoiding all this nonsense. Coming from a completely non-media biased standpoint, I despise the Bruins, but respect the hell out of them. This year they may be one of the best teams to ever play the game and, yes canucks fans, they beat you in the cup because 5 on 5 they are far and beyond the best team in the league and its impossible to describe how tough they are. They play with an edge that no other team comes close too. And for all of you people out there who think they're cheap, dirty, and bad for the concussion era of hockey, ever heard of Marc Savard? The #$%$ know first hand the dangers of that type of play. They check hard, they make you think twice about speeding over the blue line, and they do it probably better than any team has ever done it before. As far as who is the most hated team in the league? who cares? Yes the canucks may be annoying. But the hatred comes down to them being good. If they were finishing 12th in the conference every year, and still making all this noise about "woe is me," you might get a peep from the media and bloggers about them fairly often, but they are hated BECAUSE they got to the finals and BECAUSE they compete every year. People find something to hate about every single good team and player in the league. There are no perfect players or teams, so imperfections are under a microscope to help all of your haters sleep at night. I love hockey, but hockey media is total #$%$

NO FAIR!!! Comcast made Tony Gallagher argue with two guys in the same segment! This is surely a breech of the unwritten sportswriter ethical code.

And how much do those guys' brains weigh??

Wow. Just. Wow. Tony Gallagher got me to like a Bruin, outside of Chara and Thomas?? That's impressive! And his whining at the end there was the best. "Why doesn't anybody like us?? C'mon, EVERYBODY loved Anthony Michael Hall in 'Pretty In Pink'!"

That also really reminded me of Mooney's article from last week. The one where he informed me that, as someone of Swedish decent who used to live in Sweden, my distaste for the Sedins is *ethnocentric*, and has nothing to do with the way they play the game. (Tack så mycket, Harrison! Genius!)

One day they'll make a movie regarding the naivety and delusion surrounding everything Nucks. Michael Keaton, a la "Multiplicity" Dougs #2 and #4, can play the twins.

I'm just not sure how they'll be able to cast Sally Field as the remainder of the organization and its affiliates? Plus, that's a lot of crying scenes!

"Congratulations on the President's Trophy. We used to celebrate those things here too, but they don't matter."

      OWNED.

Seriously though...Tony Gallagher, not the best idea for the Canucks' spokesman.

wysh weve had our differences but you just opened pandoras box for canucks fans...how dare you use facts in your argument and direct quotes of even their media calling them not tough...i love he called it an ambush though that was the best part for me...felger:"hey gallagher we have our weekly guest standing by shawn thorton mind if we bring him on" gallagher:" not at all bring on shawn come on" thornton spews some facts about how hes fought bigger guys and multiple times in the same period and then ghallagher:"wellllll ummmm welllll ummmm" hahahaha

Let me first say I am not just a canucks fan, I'm a big hockey fan, and with that being said there are a a bunch of bruins players I really like, and have liked since before they were even bruins. I've loved lucic since he helped the giants lift the memorial, I've loved savvy since he racked up assists for me in my pool, (the love started in atlanta). and yes, I do like Tim thomas and as a goalie, I love the energy and ridiculous style (and I'm a Luongo fan, I can swallow the pride and admit all this). Now let me represent the Van fans that watch more than just their team and have for almost 20 years. This 'ambushing' of tony ghalagher (who is an awful sports writer, sorry man) is just ridiculous, are we really going to take this seriously, Wyshynski? I mean honestly, praise to thornton who was well aware of what was going to happen, good for him knowing exactly what to say when he was prepared. Too bad they didnt get the guys from 'Passittobulis' on this show, instead of a 50 something guy who's out of touch. Then again, apparently the passittobulis guys dont really understand anything, right? This is the kind of low brow, cheap media trickery I wouldn't want to the see the canucks do, or anyone else do. putting some old codger sports writer (for one particular team) on the spot is kinda classless. (again not saying our organization is the pinnacle of class but come on now)This is the kind of 'interview'. . . hockey doesn't need. Hate players, hate teams, but this stuff is getting disrespectful, on both sides. also, Wyshynski, come on man complaining has been done by both teams. personally i found your claims here a bit bias, but yea, I'm a nucks fan but I know that boston has had their fair share of verbal #$%$ finally, I think if we were THAT weak we wouldnt have made it to the 7th game of the finals.

For anyone that hasn't seen any of the hockey comments the last few days, let me paraphrase: My d*ck is bigger than yours. My dad can beat up your dad. And so on...

Can we get back to discussing hockey?
