Steven Stamkos broken stick toss leads to misconduct (Video)

Hockey sticks break often during games. And they can actually be pretty dangerous when they snap in half, creating a sharp, jagged edge. This is why you’re not allowed to throw them into the stands, even by accident – Steven Stamkos.

Check out the video of Stamkos tossing the snapped twig into the crowd at TD Garden:

Stamkos was given a 10-minute misconduct and couldn’t shoot in Tampa’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Bruins. And could potentially face discipline, via TSN’s Darren Dreger, who also indicates that Mats Sundin was once suspended a game for “hurling his stick into the crowd in disgust.”

Stamkos owned up to the play after the game per the Tampa Tribune:

“I don’t know how many sticks I’ve broken in that situation this year. Then I’m obviously a little frustrated that it broke in that situation and to see it go over the glass, I knew right away it was a 10 (minute penalty),’’ Stamkos said. “It’s kind of just a little frustrating, we had an opportunity there and a couple good looks, (Nikita Kucherov) had a great look and Rask made a big save. Obviously we would have liked to score one. A tough one to swallow.’’

This is not that bad, and just seemed careless. But there’s a reason why you can’t do this.
