Patrice Bergeron rocks full face shield after taking high stick

It has been quite the week in the NHL for players taking sharp objects in the face. You had Detroit's Drew Miller – who somehow played Thursday night in spite of taking a skate to the face on Tuesday which barely missed his eyeball.

Bruins center Patrice Bergeron took a Justin Abdelkader high stick on a face off in the second period of Boston's Thursday game against Detroit. Bergeron returned in the third period with the full shield to help Boston to a 3-2 win. Bergeron took 20 stitches from the play.

From the Boston Globe:

There was a smudge of fresh blood on Patrice Bergeron’s upper lip after Thursday’s game, right next to the horror-mask line of dark stitches that ran from his lip to his nose.

Here is the Gif of the incident. (S/t Steph as always)

Said Bergeron to the Globe:

“It was really a deep one."

"They had to stitch it up on the inside and work their way up to the outside and stitch it, so they did a good job. I guess that’s the end of my modeling career. But that’s fine.”

No, we’re not going to start a debate on why players need to wear masks like in college. But the full face shield has been our biggest All-Star the last few days.
