Kyle Okposo out with detached retina; could miss 2 months

The injury recovery time for Kyle Okposo of the New York Islanders remains 6-to-8-weeks. The nature of that injury, however, has gotten a little scarier.

Katie Strang of ESPN New York reports that Okposo, the Islanders’ top line winger, is out with a detached retina in his eye. Which is technically the “upper body” injury that the team disclosed, only about 1,000-times creepier.

We’ve seen this injury here and there in the NHL. In 2001, Philippe Boucher, then of the Los Angeles Kings, was struck with a puck and needed three months to recover from his retina surgery.  Bryan Berard also had a detached retina in 2000, although it was a more severe injury than that of Okposo.

Scary injury, and hopefully Okposo, a really bright spot for the Islanders during a season of bright spots, gets back to 100 percent.
