Fan arrested after allegedly tossing octopus onto TD Garden ice

If you’re a Detroit Red Wings fan, you should probably know by now that chucking an octopus onto the ice outside of Joe Louis Arena will probably get you into some trouble.

One fan found that out Thursday night after keeping the long-standing tradition alive on the road while the Red Wings were down 5-1 at TD Garden against the Boston Bruins.

According to the Boston Globe, after allegedly tossing the eight-tentacled creature, Jeffrey Farrugia was ejected from the arena and arrested and charged with disturbing a public assembly.

It’s a tough position to be in for the alleged octopus tosser. If you’re going to commit to hiding the stinky thing somewhere on your body and sneaking it into the game, especially on the road, you don’t want to throw it early because then you’d miss the game. Waiting until the late in the third period was the right choice even though the scoreline wasn’t in Detroit’s favor.

The tradition of the octopus began in 1952 with the eight tentacles symbolizing the eight victories needed then to win the Stanley Cup. Given the Red Wings' current playoff predicament ahead of Saturday's game at the New York Rangers, good luck finding anything one-legged on such short notice.
