Edmonton Oilers bid farewell to Rexall Place after 42 years

The final game at Rexall Place was one to forget but also to remember.

The game ended with the Oilers downing the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 and the fans in attendance, along with over 150 former players, staff and special guests saying goodbye to the 42-year-old barn.

It began with a rendition of O Canada as sung by the team’s late anthem singer Paul Lorieau with help from Oilers fans in attendance.

It ended with a victory featuring three points from Connor McDavid and many happy memories shared throughout the night.

One special moment occurred during the third period when Walter Gretzky presented a Wayne Gretzky jersey to a long-time Oilers season ticket holder.

Following the game, a ceremony was held where over 100 current and former Oilers were introduced to the crowd, with Wayne Gretzky, tucked jersey and all, getting the final roar.

As the name has changed from Northlands Coliseum to Edmonton Coliseum to Skyreach Centre to Rexall Place, the building saw some great hockey moments during its run — from two Canada Cup tournaments, seven Stanley Cup finals (including four clinchers on home ice), the memorable playoff run in 2006, Wayne Gretzky scoring 50 in 39 games and, of course, this:

The Oilers will move into the 18,641-seat, $605 million Rogers Place next season with McDavid, another top-five pick and Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Nail Yakupov -- assuming none of them get traded in the off-season -- hoping to turn the franchise's recent fortunes around in a new building.
