Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin sing! Enjoy Russia’s Sochi Olympics pop music hockey video

The 2014 Sochi Olympics are going to be fantastic for Russian weirdness, as the hosts try to put their own unique spin on the Winter Games. We expected Russian NHL players in grandiose Red Army hats, perhaps Alex Radulov emerging from a giant Fabergé egg during the opening ceremonies.

What we hoped for: a music video.

Something cheese-tastic, on the level of a “Super Bowl Shuffle.” Something that featured Russian stars actually lending their voices to a train wreck of a track.

Our hopes have been realized: “Shaybu, Shaybu” by Russian pop star Irina Allegrova is that music video, incorporating black-and-white footage of players in Soviet hockey camps with carefully edited Russian national team footage from today (no losing to Canada!) with Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Alex Radulov, Nikolai Kulemin, Pavel Bure, Vladislav Tretiak and others providing the chorus.

It’s like “We Are The World,” only instead of feeding starving Africans they're feeding Russia’s hockey ego you guys! Check it out!

Our own Dmitry Chesnokov provides the lyrical translation for the first verse and the chorus:

Sometimes there are miracles in this world.
And as if it is a joke,
That the best game for our men
By accident was born in Canada.
To the battle on ice
Everyone had that passion. That ancient passion.

Shaybu! Shaybu!
The victory is ours.
Shaybu! Shaybu!
Guys, we are with you.
And if it’s really needed, we will score another
Shaybu! Shaybu!
Russia is behind you.
Shaybu! Shaybu!
Guys, you are the strength!

We are the Russian team,
We are the Red Machine!
We are the Red Machine!

Fist-pumping, air-drumming awesome! Can’t wait to hear this song to the point if wanting to hammer a sickle into our ear drums during the Sochi Games.

If nothing else, this music video is a tribute to how great Russia’s been when it really matters: In the IIHF world championship tournament.

But seriously: GENO MALKIN. All day everyday:
