Buffalo Bills will not play in Toronto in 2014
It never made much sense for the Buffalo Bills to move regular-season games to Toronto.
Well, actually, there was a decent reason. The team made a good amount of money for shipping a home game to Canada each of the last six seasons. But competitively it was a nightmare. The team went 1-5 in what basically amounted to an extra road game each year. This past year's game against Atlanta, sparsely attended and with many Falcons fans in attendance to see the Bills lose 34-31, seemed to finally put the question in the team's mind: Why in the heck are we doing this?
This year, the Bills won't be doing it. The team announced it is not playing in Toronto's Rogers Centre in 2014.
"We will use this time to collectively evaluate opportunities and build on the foundation to enhance future games," the Bills said in a statement. "We are committed to continuing our partnership and have secured a robust sponsorship agreement for the 2014 season that will bring Canadian NFL fans visibility and access to the Bills."
While that sounds very positive for continuing the Rogers Centre games in the future, one has to wonder if this is the end of the experiment entirely. The Bills have had a horrible playoff drought that dates back to 1999, and presumably would like to end that streak. That's hard when they're voluntarily giving up one of their eight home games every year.
There are many Bills fans in the Toronto area, and they're probably a bit bummed by the news. But maybe if the team ends up being a little better as a result, they won't mind as much.
