World junior championship: Moncton Wildcats’ Ivan Barbashev pulls toe drag, scores for Russia (VIDEO)

Ivan Barbashev was credited with one shot on goal in Russia's 7-1 win over Switzerland but suffice to say, the Moncton Wildcats star made it count.

Russia actually conceded the first goal, but then the 18-year-old who could be the first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League player taken in the 2014 NHL draft provided a lift with a good-to-be-lucky, lucky-to-be-good goal in the opening period. Barbashev feinted and toe-dragged San Jose Sharks first-rounder pick Mirco Mueller, Switzerland's highest-profile defenceman, then took a shot that hit goalie Sascha Rochow in the back, ricocheted upward and descended into the net.

Fortuitous bounce, sure, but the 18-year-old Barbashev did outwit Mueller, defenceman who had a long stay in the Sharks training camp this fall before he was returned to the WHL's Everett Silvertips.

That strange bounce cancelled out an own goal by Russia. Defenceman Vyacheslav Osnovin put the puck in his own net for Switzerland's goal.

Barbashev has 13 goals and 37 points over 29 games for Moncton, which is currently enjoying an eight-game win streak despite the loss of his services. Here's hoping this post isn't a jinx for the 'Cats, who had a rivalry game against Saint John in Quebec League play on Saturday.
