Storm’s Kerby Rychel notches 4 points on father’s Spitfires: Friday’s 3 Stars

No. 1 star: Kerby Rychel, Guelph Storm (OHL)

The Columbus Blue Jackets first-round pick killed two birds with one stone. He not only took it to his former team, the Windsor Spitfires, but he also stole two points from his father, Warren Rychel, who’s the general manager and partial owner of the Spitfires. It, however, seems safe to assume that Rychel didn’t go into the match with the mentality that he had a score to settle since his dad’s decision to part ways with him at the trade deadline gave him a better opportunity to win a championship on a top contender in his 19-year-old season.

Following assisting a Roby Fabbri (1G-3A, +1) goal in the opening period, Rychel notched his lone goal of the night on the power play in the second period. The 6-foot-1, 202-pound forward went onto assist Zack Mitchell (1G-2A, +1) and Nick Ebert (1G, +1) markers in the final 20 minutes to give him four points on the night and capture the 6-4 win.

The victory gives the Storm a 45-9-2-1 record and puts them up by 14 points on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for top spot in the OHL's Western Conference.

No. 2 star: Marek Langhamer, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)

The Moose Jaw Warriors couldn’t muster a single goal past Langhamer. The Phoenix Coyotes prospect turned away all 24 shots that came his way. The shutout is the Czech Republic native’s second of the year and fourth of Dub career.

The second star is more of a team award, though. Several Tigers had impressive nights on the stats sheet in the 6-0 win because of a five-goal middle frame. Trevor Cox and Cole Sanford stood out in front with one goal and two assists apiece. Meanwhile, Miles Koules (1G-1A, +2), Curtis Valk (1G-1A, +3), Chad Butcher (2G, +2) and Dylan Bredo (2A, +3) posted two-point performances.

The win keeps the Tigers three-points up on the Kootenay Ice for fourth spot in the Eastern Conference. Taking into account there’s only 11 games left on the schedule, the Calgary Hitmen are up 11 points on the Tigers and the sixth-place Swift Current Broncos are behind the Ice by eight points, it seems safe to predict Medicine Hat will head to Cranbrook for their first-round playoff matchup.

No. 3 star: Martin Reway, Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)

Reway was in on five of the Olympiques’ eight goals as they beat the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 8-4. The Montreal Canadiens prospect kicked off the night by scoring the first marker of the game just 2:43 into it. After helping set up a Jake Coughler (1G) goal in the latter half of the first, he notched three consecutive assists in the middle frame. He connected twice with Simon Tardif-Richard (2G, +3) and once with Vaclav Karabacek (1G-2A, +2). The showing was the Czech Republic native’s second five-point night of his junior career.

Honourable mentions: Matt and Ryan Rupert, London Knights (OHL)

The Rupert brothers were too much for the Ottawa 67’s to handle. The 19-year-old twins scored three-point nights apiece to lead the Knights to a 6-3 win. Ryan Rupert began the night by helping set up a Gemel Smith snipe just over six minutes into the opening frame on the man advantage. The brothers connected in the second period as Matt Rupert, who’s a Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, set up Ryan. With the game knotted at three after 40 minutes, Matt sealed the victory for the Knights with two goals. He potted his first on the penalty kill 12 minutes into it and scored his second, which was assisted by Ryan, at the 18:02 mark.

Potent notables: Raphael Corriveau (2G-1A, +2) led the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles over the Charlottetown Islanders in the 6-4 contest… Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Jonathan Drouin (1G-3A, +1) and NHL draft prospect Nikolaj Ehlers (2G, +2) had big nights in the Halifax Mooseheads’ 7-1 win against the Shawinigan Cataractes… Chicoutimi Sagueneens puck-stopper Julio Billia turned aside 39 of 40 pucks in a 4-1 victory over the Sherbrooke Phoenix… Detroit Red Wings first-rounder Anthony Mantha (1G-1A, +2) and Kevin Bouchard (22-save shutout) led the Val-d’Or Foreurs over the Acadie-Barthurst Titan in the 3-0 affair…. Peterborough Petes centre Anthony Stefano scored two goals and one assist in a 4-0 victory against the Mississauga Steelheads… NHL draft prospect Jake Virtanen (1G-2A, +2) led the Calgary Hitmen over the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 5-4 match… Rhyse Dieno (2G-1A, +2) helped the Red Deer Rebels defat the Vancouver Giants 5-3… Kelowna Rockets goalie Jackson Whistle stopped 35 of 37 shots in a 4-2 win against the Prince George Cougars… Prince Albert Raiders import Leon Draisaitl scored two goals and one helper as his club beat the Tri-City Americans 6-4.
