Super Sunday’s 3 Stars: Rychel revs Spitfires’ engine in comeback win

No. 1 star: Kerby Rychel, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)

The man-child power forward scored two goals in the Spitfires' 5-3 comeback win over the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors that was fuelled by their 17-year-olds. The kids with 1994 on their passports scored four of Windsor's goals, with NHL draft prospect Brady Vail getting the last-minute game-winner and Ben Johnson also scoring.

Rychel, who's got a shot at 40 goals this seasons, woke up Windsor when it was down 2-0 in the opening frame. He threw some stiff bodychecks on one shift before and then wired a slapshot home for a goal. The game was tied 3-3 in the final minute when Vail finished off on 2-on-1 to snap the tie, then intercepted a pass by the Majors' Dylan DeMelo, leading to a 2-on-0 and a feed to Rychel who tapped in the clincher. The win completed a big four-point weekend for the Spitfires.

Make it back-to-back first star selections for potential 2013 NHL first-round picks. Rychel is six days older than Medicine Hat Tigers scoring star Hunter Shinkaruk.

No. 2 star: Johan Mattsson, Sudbury Wolves (OHL)

The Wolves wound up winning successive road games this weekend after getting hammered at home on Friday. A lot of the credit has to go to Mattsson. The Chicago Blackhawks-drafted goalie stopped 84-of-89 shots across the two games, including his 45-save effort in their 3-1 win over the Brampton Battalion. The Swedish goalie made 14 stops in the opening 20 minutes while the Wolves skated off the bus legs after playing in Peterborough the previous night and he also stared down a full two-minute, two-man penalty kill in the second period when a goal would have got the Battalion back in the game. The only Brampton goal came on a rebound opportunity.

Sudbury, which is just a point behind Barrie for fourth in the league's Eastern Conference, got two-point days from offensive leaders Andrey Kuchin and Michael Sgarbossa. You likely presumed as much.

No. 3 star: Scott Laughton, Oshawa Generals (OHL)

Laughton, 17, scored the Generals' first goal and also assisted on the game-winner in the Gens' 4-2 home win over the Oshawa Generals. In terms of win probability added, both goals that the Oakville, Ont., native figured into were massive. Laughton snipped an unassisted goal in the first period to erase an early Storm lead. He also set up New York Rangers prospect Christian Thomas' game-winner just 42 seconds after the Storm, looking to steal two points on the road, had tied the game.

Honourable mention: Josh Shalla, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)

The Michael Fine-Josh Shalla-Brandon Saad trio, AKA The Fine Line, continued to haul the Spirit up the standings. The trio, which is a great mix of experience, size and skill, counted a combined seven points in Saginaw's resounding 4-1 road win over the Kitchener Rangers, including a beauty tic-tac-toe play for the third goal where Shalla deflected in Fine's pass one-handed. Shalla had one goal and one assist, while Fine (1G-1A) and Saad (1G-2A; his goal was the empty-netter) also had multi-point afternoons.

The Rangers might have deserved a better fate. They had a goal disallowed due to a player being in the crease and hit at least one crossbar. Eighteen-year-old Saginaw goalie Clint Windsor also made 37 saves.
